Get your checkbook out - you've come last, S.League says

SINGAPORE (Reuters) - As if a rock-bottom finish in Singapore's S.League was not bad enough, the city-state's soccer bosses are now planning to punish the weakest team further with fines, according to a local newspaper.

Under a new "carrot-and-stick" approach, while the reward for winning the Singaporean title was being boosted, five-figure penalties were to be introduced for make-weights, TODAY newspaper reported on Wednesday.

The team that finishes last in the 13-team league next season will face a 50,000 Singapore dollar ($41,000) penalty, while the 12th-placed side will be S$30,000 worse off.

"We hope these - stiff penalties, not just a slap on the wrist - will inspire clubs to do well," S.League boss Lim Chin told the paper.

"'Competitive' and 'interesting' were the two key words for us in deciding on the initiatives for the league next year and, while the S.League is not ready for a promotion-relegation system, we want every team to give their best," he added, explaining the unusual tough-love approach.

The Singapore Football Association was unavailable for comment when contacted by Reuters.

Fans' reaction in Singapore has ranged from incredulity to outrage, with a number saying the fines would be counter-productive and tantamount to kicking a man while he is down.

But Lim said the change would be "better for the league than just sticking to what we've had before.

"We think the quantum of the penalties is painful enough to force teams to make an effort to do well, while not big enough to force clubs to sit out the league," he added.

"Having said that, we will allow clubs to make phased payments out of their subsidies in the following year."

Destination Dining: The New Plaza Food Hall

I?m not sure what rock I?ve been living under, but I missed the memo about the new additions to the Plaza Food Hall. ?I knew that Todd English had taken over and installed a swanky food court of his own where you could sit anywhere and order from the sushi counter, raw bar, pasta station, pizza oven and rotisserie. Considering its location and proximity to Central Park, it was bound to be touristy and crowded, but it?s a good solution for diners who can?t decide what to eat for dinner because you can get a little of everything.

But the latest additions are a game changer. ?Living in midtown has always had its drawbacks, which mostly come in the form of overpriced restaurants. It?s not like living in the West Village where a funky, new restaurant with an ambitious chef opens weekly. ?I was walking by and wanted a cup of coffee, so I stopped in and stumbled upon a whole, new world of food. ?No. 7 ?Subs and Luke?s Lobster? In the Plaza? Really? Awesome. ?You?ve gotta love the newfangled food courts these days. ?The Plaza Food Hall boasts over twenty food kiosks, including ?Maison De Chocolat,?Payard, Billy?s Bakery, and Three Tarts.

You might consider going for a run in the park, then rewarding yourself with lunch at the Plaza Food Court. ?Or you can skip the run and head directly to Luke?s Lobster for the Trio, a mini Lobster Roll, Shrimp Roll and Crab Roll with a bag of Malt Vinegar Potato Chips. ?Once upon a time, us uptowners had to work our way down to the East Village for Luke?s lightly spiced lobster knuckle and claw meat rolls with just a dab of mayo, a squirt of lemon, and nothing more, all tucked inside a warm, griddled hot dog bun. ?There?s a good New England Clam Chowder as well (though I?d skip the Peanut Butter Whoopie Pie with a Maine Blueberry filling, which is a tad too messy and cold).

Then again, the lure of?No. 7 Subs?s?Tilapia Melt is pretty powerful, too. ?The idea of Tilapia with melted havarti cheese, crunchy nibbles of fried garlic and shredded cabbage, ?stuffed into a sub roll may sound strange (a Tuna Melt comes to mind), but it?s easily worth devoting a lunch break or two to. ?So is the Roasted Broccoli Sub, layered with Ricotta Salata, pine nuts, shallots and sweet-spicy pickles. ?(I only wish they sold the pickles to-go!) Perhaps the most compelling sandwich is one chef Tyler Kord made exclusively for the Plaza Food Hall. ?It?s a clever ensemble, dubbed The No. 7 Sub Club, a complex layering of Turkey, Ham, ?Pico De Lettuce?, Jalapeno Mayo, and a crunchy foil of BBQ Potato Chips. ?The lettuce is a crunchy, refreshing riff on pico de gallo with lettuce in lieu of tomatoes, onions and chilis.

Luke?s Lobster Trio

If you work in the area, you could make a habit of the food court. ?There?s a terrific Smoked Duck Tartine at Tartinery and a died and gone to heaven Pumpkin Corncake, an earthy corncake, topped with pumpkin batter and a sprinkling of sea salt flakes ? a savory, sweet and satisfying pastry that just might be my new favorite comfort food for fall. ?While you?re there, sample the mini Black & White Red Velvet Cookies from William Greenberg,?the?Pumpkin Macarons?at?Payard, and Three Tarts??Marshmallow Steamer, a hot and frothy drink made with homemade marshmallows and milk, that I could easily snuggle up with all winter long. ?While we?re on the subject of sweets, ? I recommend a visit to YoArte. ??All those frozen yogurt haters out there might change there mind after tasting this crazy cream yogurt. My only complaint is they took the Thin Mint yogurt off the menu and replaced it with Coffee yogurt instead!?Fortunately, they also added Pumpkin which might be the best pumpkin yogurt I?ve had to date. Half the fun are the toppings at YoArte. While there?s too many to name, highlights include mint caviar, which an ingenious topping for the Thin Mint (can you tell I?m upset?), but good on chocolate, too. There?s chocolate clodhoppers, chocolate covered gummy bears, peanut dust, and more.

There?s also a Sushi of Gari, which I didn?t mention because I highly recommend you avoid it! ?The food is pricey and underwhelming at best ? the kind of sushi you eat because you?re hungry then pray you won?t get sick from it. (Just saying.) ?I had to send back the Scallop Roll because it was so ominously fishy, and that?s never a good sign at a sushi joint I don?t care how fancy it is. ?But there?s so many other great spots, like Todd English?s Sausage Kiosk with great Chorizo Sausages, and even better traditional Hot Dogs, tucked inside your choice of a Brioche Bun or a Pretzel Bun (go with the pretzel). ?Or just order a Sigmund?s Pretzel on the side.

Home-Schooling, Comic Con Style (Part 1) - NYTimes.com

Ask your average Comic Con vendor if he?s got any educational titles, and prepare to be met with the rather-too-swift assertion that his cyborg-superheroes and rotting zombies ?promote literacy.? Mmm. Actually, what my 12-year-old home-schooled son and I were in the market for was something closer to the ?Epic Battles of the Civil War? series we picked up at the New York Historical Society. I was surprised to learn it was published by Marvel Entertainment, something that failed to spark any recognition or even interest in those working Marvel?s huge Javits Center booth last Sunday. In their defense, it was the final day of a well-attended convention, and the cacophony of the surrounding video game demo stations rivaled that of the Kid?s Day throng. Surely that?s why they treated me like the nun who blundered into a porn shop, in search of Holy Host. I mean, it?s not as if? I was wearing a nun costume ? or any costume, for that matter.

I acknowledge that the Comic Con exists primarily to make a fortune off the hard-core adult comics fans who are only too happy to pay top dollar for the opportunity to dress up and get their photo taken with such celebrities as Vic ?Mini Me? Troyer and Miss August, but with persistence and patience, we managed to truffle up a couple of armloads of curriculum-worthy materials, along with a Minecraft pickaxe. Here?s what we found ? all perfect for sparking up any subject with a little graphic style.

HISTORY
?Gettysburg? by C. M. Butzer
The grody ?Walking Dead? images abounding at this year?s Con have nothing on the amputated limbs piling up in this primary-sourced retelling of the Civil War?s bloodiest battle. The author, whose self-published mini comic on John Brown attracted the attention of HarperCollins, takes the story up through Lincoln?s famous speech at the newly constructed memorial, then supplies fascinating and painstaking notes on his historical research.

?Northwest Passage? by Scott Chantler
I confess, I hated history as a girl. Except for the plight of the slaves, dramatized in such television events as ?Roots? and ?The Autobiography of Miss Jane Pittman,?? it was all just humdrum memorization of dates and names. ?Northwest Passage? is history as wilderness adventure, complete with hangings, snares and barrel-chested dudes sporting buckskin and well-fitting breeches.

?Marathon? by Boaz Yakin and Joe Infurnari
Ancient history with a side of sports ? there are swords, shields and bulging muscles aplenty in this drama- in-real-life take on Eucles, an Athenian messenger who?s said to have run 306 miles round trip from Athens to Sparta in 108-degree heat , thus preserving Greek civilization, and by extension, the Olympics. Sounds like someone was bucking for the ancient Greek Good Citizenship award.

?The Silence of Our Friends? by Mark Long, Jim Demonakos, and Nate Powell
Rocketing ahead to the not-so-distant past, which is to say my own lifetime, we have a civil rights-era tale based on one creator?s actual experience in suburban Houston. The complexities of race relations are given their due as the authors consider the impact a false accusation has on both a black family and a white family. Timely reading indeed.

SCIENCE
?Caroline?s Catalog? by E. J. Barnes
The most outwardly humble item in our haul, E. J. Barnes?s self-produced bio-comic of the 18th-century astronomer (and musician) Caroline Herschel, is also one of the most exciting from a Women?s Studies standpoint. Girl power.

The Beware? series by the Perkins Brothers
Remember Scooby Doo? Imagine if rather than unmasking the town crank, the gang had found solid scientific explanations for every mysterious curse and haunting they investigated.

?Xoc: The Journey of a Great White? by Matt Dembicki

Beautifully rendered in predominant blues, grays and an occasional necessary red, Xoc follows a 17-foot great white shark as she makes her way from coastal California to Hawaii. (Jealous.) She and her turtle sidekick are occasionally shown conversing in English, but otherwise the science seems solid, and the characters never come off as cuddly or anthropomorphized. The boy sums it up as ?Man vs. the Wild, but with a shark.?

?First in Space? by James Vining
A few years ago, I managed to traumatize the boy with Laika, a graphic account of the doomed Soviet space dog?s orbit around earth. Ham, a NASA- trained chimpanzee in the Air Force?s Mercury Program has a much happier ending, thank God.

LITERATURE

?Kill Shakespeare? by Anthony Del Col and Conor McCreery
Our home library is already groaning under the weight of Shakespeare comic-format adaptations, but who can say no to a luridly bloody reinvention whereby Hamlet, Juliet, Othello, Falstaff, Romeo and Puck must battle against the dark forces of Richard III, Lady Macbeth and Iago? A heaping helping of agggghs, thwoks and plucked-out eyes (okay, just two) spice up the thous and thines.

One Peace Manga Classic Readers
Not to be confused with the wildly popular One Piece manga, these titles, including ?Don Quixote? and ?The War of the Worlds? are translations of Japanese adaptations. The editor? Robert McGuire thinks of them as gateway drugs. Barreling through Moby-Dick, my son was struck by Mr. Stubbs?s? explanation to Ishmael, ?You don?t laugh ?cuz it?s fun to! Things are fun because you?re laughing.? If Melville isn?t spinning in the grave yet, wait until he hears Milo?s verdict that ?it doesn?t need to be as long as the real Moby- Dick is because a picture says 1,000 words.? Tis the price of lasting celebrity in the age of PlayStation and YouTube.

?The Odyssey? by Sam Ita
The Odyssey in Pop Up form. I don?t want to give too much away, so just two little words for you, my friend: Polyphemus? Eye.

Class dismissed. We?ll pick up tomorrow with our Comic Con haul as pertains to Social Studies, the Arts, Language Instruction and Continuing Education.

Study: Multivitamins may lower cancer risk in men

America's favorite dietary supplements, multivitamins, modestly lowered the risk for cancer in healthy male doctors who took them for more than a decade, the first large study to test these pills has found.

The result is a surprise because many studies of individual vitamins have found they don't help prevent chronic diseases and some even seemed to raise the risk of cancer.

In the new study, multivitamins cut the chance of developing cancer by 8 percent. That is less effective than a good diet, exercise and not smoking, each of which can lower cancer risk by 20 percent to 30 percent, cancer experts say.

Multivitamins also may have different results in women, younger men or people less healthy than those in this study.

"It's a very mild effect and personally I'm not sure it's significant enough to recommend to anyone" although it is promising, said Dr. Ernest Hawk, vice president of cancer prevention at the University of Texas MD Anderson Cancer Center and formerly of the National Cancer Institute.

"At least this doesn't suggest a harm" as some previous studies on single vitamins have, he said.

Hawk reviewed the study for the American Association for Cancer Research, which is meeting in Anaheim, Calif., where the study was to be presented on Wednesday. It also was published online in the Journal of the American Medical Association.

About one-third of U.S. adults and as many as half of those over 50 take multivitamins. They are marketed as a kind of insurance policy against bad eating. Yet no government agency recommends their routine use "regardless of the quality of a person's diet," says a fact sheet from the federal Office of Dietary Supplements.

Some fads, such as the antioxidant craze over vitamins A and E and beta-carotene, backfired when studies found more health risk with those supplements, not less. Many of those were single vitamins in larger doses than the "100 percent of daily value" amounts that multivitamins typically contain.

Science on vitamins has been skimpy. Most studies have been observational ? they look at groups of people who do and do not use vitamins, a method that can't give firm conclusions.

Dr. J. Michael Gaziano, of Brigham and Women's Hospital and VA Boston, led a stronger test. Nearly 15,000 male doctors who were 50 or older and free of cancer when the study started were given monthly packets of Centrum Silver or fake multivitamins without knowing which type they received.

After about 11 years, there were 2,669 new cancers, and some people had cancer more than once. For every 1,000 men per year in the study, there were 17 cancers among multivitamin users and more than 18 among those taking the placebo pills. That worked out to an 8 percent lower risk of developing cancer in the vitamin group.

Multivitamins made no difference in the risk of developing prostate cancer, which accounted for half of all cases. They lowered the risk of other cancers collectively by about 12 percent. There also was a trend toward fewer cancer deaths among multivitamin users, but the difference was so small it could have occurred by chance alone.

Side effects were fairly similar except for more rashes among vitamin users. The National Institutes of Health paid for most of the study. Pfizer Inc. supplied the pills and other companies supplied the packaging.

The main reason to take a multivitamin is to correct or prevent a deficiency, "but there may be a modest benefit in reducing the risk of cancer in older men," Gaziano said.

Cancer experts said the results need to be confirmed by another study before recommending multivitamins to the public. These participants were healthier ? only 4 percent smoked, for example.

For people who do want to take multivitamins, doctors suggest:

?Be aware that they are dietary supplements, which do not get the strict testing required of prescription medicines.

?Ask your doctor before taking any. Vitamin K can interfere with common heart medicines and blood thinners, and vitamins C and E can lower the effectiveness of some types of chemotherapy. For people having surgery, some vitamins affect bleeding and response to anesthesia.

?Current and former smokers should avoid multivitamins with lots of beta-carotene or vitamin A; two studies have tied them to increased risk of lung cancer.

Bronx teacher banned over racy photos of student

By Sevil Omer, NBC News

A history teacher for the nation?s largest school district has been banned from teaching in New York City for fondling and forcing a student to pose for explicit photos inside a storage cage, according to?authorities.

Special investigators for New York City School District say 57-year-old Raemon Matthews took racy photographs of a 17-year-old girl inside a cage used for storage in a classroom at the Samuel Gompers Career and Technical Education High School in the Bronx in 2009.

Earlier this year, Matthews pleaded guilty to one count of misdemeanor sex abuse for fondling the student. He was sentenced in June to serve one year of probation. Matthews resigned in April.

Attempts by NBC News to contact school officials or union officials to request terms of Matthews? resignation were unsuccessful on Tuesday.???

According to the investigators? report, Matthews convinced the?student to pose for the photos by telling her she needed a portfolio for college recruiters.

Investigators say the student complied with Matthews?s photo sessions because she feared failing the class. She told investigators that when?she tried to put a stop to the photo session, Matthews told her ?No, boo-boo, we?re just getting started,? The New York Daily News reported.

A custodian found the photos on a CD in 2010 and alerted school officials.

Officials with the New York City Department of Education said Matthews will not?be allowed to?teach in the district.

Matthews? lawyer, Jonathan Goltzman, also was unavailable for comment on Tuesday.

He commented earlier that all sides had been satisfied with Matthews' plea. Goltzman told the Daily News: ?My client accepted responsibility and he?s moving on with his life.?

The Associated Press contributed to this report.

India: Can India Inc make interest payments on its dollar debt?

Wind turbine maker Suzlon Energy's announcement that it may not be able to repay foreign currency bonds worth some $200 million has again raised questions about the financial health of debt-laden Indian companies, following the dramatic depreciation of the rupee this year.

According to the Hindustan Times, Indian firms racked up a big tab prior to the 2008 financial crisis, when US lenders had money to burn. But now they're being forced to pay the piper, even as business slows down around the world and the drooping rupee makes their interest payments look steeper than ever.

"The ability of companies to repay debt - in other words the financial health of our companies - will be further tested in the coming three months when bonds to the tune of $1.3 billion come up for redemption," the paper said.

What's at stake?

According to a Fitch report released early this year, out of 59 companies whose foreign currency bonds come up for redemption in 2012, about 12 may default, the paper said. Meanwhile, the market for additional bonds has pretty much dried up -- plunging from around $7 billion in bonds in 2007 to a measly $800 million in 2011. ?That number is likely to drop by half this year, the Hindustan Times said.

For Suzlon founder-CEO Tulsi Tanti, matters are particularly dire, however, according to the Economic Times. The company failed to pay a $200 million tab on Thursday, but that's only a drop in the bucket. Its total debt ranges around $2.8 billion, the newspaper reports, which amounts to almost twice its equity base. Meanwhile, it's reported losses for the past three years.

The upshot: Tanti, who built Suzlon into the world's fifth largest wind turbine maker from scratch, could well lose control of the company, the paper said.

Emboldened by a previous case in which India's court system upheld a suit by bondholders that forced generic drugmaker Wockhardt into liquidation to repay its lenders, Suzlon bondholders may well file a similar?petition to put pressure on Tanti.

JP Morgan Makes Cash Investment in Nigerian Online Retailer Jumia

?

Africa?s fastest growing online retailer Jumia has, alongside South African online fashion retailer Zando, announced that U.S.-based J. P. Morgan Asset Management has injected funds into their operations.

?

?

J. P. Morgan Asset Management, a leading asset manager for institutions, is investing into their operations via a German holding company in a cash-for-equity investment.

Jumia, like Zando, was launched earlier this year with the support of Rocket Internet GmbH, the European Incubator of internet start-ups.

Zando has grown significantly since it has been launched and has become one of the top five online stores in South Africa.

Jumia?s operation in Nigeria has been at the front of e-commerce activities in Nigeria. It also operates in Egypt and Morroco.

Earlier,?Kasuwa and Sabunta was rolled into one operation?and became?Jumia, in an effort by Rocket Internet GmbH to merge their African ecommerce operations.

Jumia co-founders and joint-CEO?s Tunde Kehinde and Raphael Afaedor are optimistic that Nigeria is going to become an e-commerce haven. According to the two, the investment is a real turning point for Jumia, and e-commerce in Nigeria.

?With this investment, we will strengthen our ?current footprint, offering our customers more brands, more categories and more services as well as improving operations; we are among the pioneers of e-commerce in Nigeria and this investment confirms that Nigeria will become a very large market in the very near future,? they said.

J.P. Morgan Asset Management Portfolio Manager Robert Cousin, who worked on the deal from New York, confirmed the transaction saying: ?We are excited to partner with Jumia and Zando as the companies continue to expand their e-commerce presence in Africa.?

The e-commerce frenzy in Nigeria has become intense with the likes of?Kamdora,?Konga?and?Taafoo?coming onto the online retailing scene.

Start-ups in Nigeria have been gathering interests from Investors within and outside the country. In July this year,?the Nigeria-based Iroko Partners raised US$2 million from Sweden?s Kinnevik, an early investor in Groupon Inc. Iroko has previously raised $8 million from U.S.-based hedge fund Tiger Global in April as investors in emerging markets seek to tap into one of the fastest growing movie businesses in the world.

Paga, a Nigeria-based mobile payment company, also?raised its first round of funding in May 2011?from Goodwell West Africa, a microfinance investment vehicle co-managed by investment manager Goodwell Investment and Alltheia Capital in Nigeria.?It received another fund(undisclosed amount) into the business from Adlevo Capital, Omdiyar network, Acumen Fund and Capricorn Investment Group.

Microsoft NOT Spending $1.8 Billion On Windows 8 Ads - Business ...

Microsoft will almost certainly NOT be spending up to $1.8 billion to launch Windows 8, as reported by Forbes last week.

Sure, it's possible that the company could blow a budget that size on a launch. But to do so it would have to colossally overspend its money, with ads in places they don't need to be. That would be a sign of desperation and waste.

And historically, Microsoft has never spent that kind of money.

The number appeared unsourced in a story by Dave Einstein, who blogs on Forbes but isn't a staff writer. That's the first red flag: Einstein doesn't specifically say where he heard the $1.8 billion number from.

He does mention "Microsoft analyst Rob Enderle," who turns out to be the self-described "most quoted technology analyst in the U.S." (which is not the same as being the most-respected tech analyst in the U.S.).

Historically, Microsoft has never spent anywhere near $1 billion on a product launch. It may have spent $400 million on Windows Phone 7.

And, according to Ad Age, there was $500 million behind the Kinect game device.

Microsoft doesn't break out its ad budget by product, but its 10-K filing with the SEC also pours skepticism on the idea that it would burn $1 billion on a single launch.

Recently, Microsoft's total sales, general and admin budget has hovered between $13.2 billion and $13.9 billion per year. That includes all sorts of non-advertising expenses. So the company certainly could spend $1.8 billion if it really wanted to.

But in the last fiscal year, total sales and marketing expenses increased only $726 million or 5%, the company reported. In fiscal 2011, "Windows Division? ? Sales and marketing expenses increased $182 million or 6%, reflecting increased advertising of Windows and Windows Live," the company said.

Those are the kinds of ups and down in the MSFT ad budget.

What is more likely to happen is that Microsoft will commit half a billion or more to the launch, and various partners ? laptop makers and so on???will commit hundreds of millions more in co-op dollars to co-promote products with Windows 8.

That might come close to topping out at $1 billion, but that's all.

RG3 runs for 138 yards; Redskins top Vikings 38-26

LANDOVER, Md. (AP) ? Robert Griffin III dropped back, waited a beat, then quickly took off. A first down on third-and-6 might have been enough to put the game away.

Instead, the Washington Redskins rookie left the Minnesota Vikings defense behind as he streaked down the left sideline for 76 yards. He didn't stop until he took a seat on the front row, performing what is quickly becoming known as the "Landover Leap."

He might have suffered his first NFL concussion the week before, but RG3 was still RG3. The Heisman Trophy winner rallied his team from an early hole, ran for 138 yards and threw for 182 on Sunday in a 38-26 victory that snapped the Vikings' three-game winning streak as well as the Redskins eight-game run of futility at home.

After falling behind 9-0 and being outgained 148-7, the Redskins (3-3) responded with 24 straight points during a stretch in which they outgained the Vikings 225-14. Minnesota (4-2) paid the price for promising drives that produced 3s instead of 7s, with four field goals from Blair Walsh accounting for all their points through the first three quarters.

The Vikings finally found the end zone on Michael Jenkins' 9-yard catch with 8:02 to play and Kyle Rudolph's 1-yard snag ? set up by Josh Wilson's pass interference penalty ? with 3:36 to go to cut the Redskins' lead to 31-26.

But Griffin, sporting a huge gray bandage on his chin, responded with the longest touchdown run by an NFL quarterback since Kordell Stewart scampered 80 yards for the Pittsburgh Steelers against the Carolina Panthers in 1996. The Vikings had started to use their timeouts, hoping to get the ball back with a chance to win, but Griffin dispelled that notion to put the Redskins up by 12 with 2:43 remaining.

Griffin left last week's loss to the Atlanta Falcons when he was hit in the head in the third quarter while trying to get some extra yards on a third down scramble. He passed the NFL's post-concussion tests over the following days and was cleared to play, but coaches and teammates hoped that he had learned a lesson about when to keep running and when to get out of bounds.

Accordingly, the fans cheered when he darted to the sidelines on the first play of the second series, but by no means did it indicate that he had gone soft. He still ran the option. He still looked for the extra yard when it meant something. He had two rushing touchdowns to give him six on the year, already surpassing the previous single-season franchise record of four. And he's just six games into his career.

During one stretch, Griffin ran on six straight times, starting with a 15-yard scramble. Then he scrambled for three more before being brought down by a horse-collar tackle, adding a half-the-distance-to-the-goal penalty to the gain.

Why mess with what's working? On the next play, Griffin took off for the end zone, running for 7 yards and stretching the ball over the goal line with his right hand as he was tackled by cornerback Chris Cook.

He also drew penalties. In addition to the horse collar call, he turned a slight shove from Erin Henderson into a roughing-the-passer call, the flag emerging from the official's pocket only after Griffin had tumbled to the turf and appealed for the call.

And, yes, Griffin can throw as well. He completed 17 of 22 passes with one touchdown and only his second interception of the year. Fellow rookie Alfred Morris added a 1-yard scoring run, fullback Darrel Young caught a 6-yard TD pass, and former Vikings safety Madieu Williams returned an interception 24 yards for Washington's fourth defensive touchdown of the year. The Redskins scored only 43 points off turnovers last year; they already have 49 this year.

The Vikings hadn't allowed more than 23 points in a game this year, one of the reasons they've been an early season surprise. In this game, they were let down by both sides of the ball.

The offense made it look easy on Minnesota's first three possessions ? until it hit the red zone. Drives that got inside the 10 yielded field goals of 20, 27 and 27 yards. There was another field goal in the third quarter.

Christian Ponder completed 35 of 52 passes for 352 yards with two touchdowns and two interceptions and was credited with a lost fumble when the ball slipped out of his hand as he went back to pass. The ball floated into the hands of linebacker Lorenzo Alexander, setting Young's touchdown in a sequence in which the Redskins scored 14 points in 13 seconds.

Adrian Peterson, who at times appeared to be limping on his sprained left ankle, had 79 yards on 17 carries for the Vikings.

Yoga for Cancer | Deborah Shemesh

Yoga is a ancient Sanskrit word that means union, yoking, or oneness. ?A diagnosis of cancer is a sign that somewhere in your body there is a disconnect. ?In most cases a cell or cells randomly split from their original domain ?and began to travel elsewhere in the body creating a new domain, a tumor or tumors that can and will if left untreated invade other body parts. After time a the full blown disease or diagnosis with cancer manifests and can be seen with the visible eye. ?I ask myself, as a cancer patient and someone who is healed from a cancer prognosis, what happened? How did I get the disease, and how did I heal from disease?

I believe that trauma or sadness, grief, shame or some ?other kind of emotional trigger caused the cancer cells to release from it?s core healthy tissue and began to multiply; ?feeding from other cells creating bigger and bigger colonies of invasive or useless tissue called cancer.?Mysteriously, our blood then begins to nourish these tumors, and cancer patients have to undergo surgery to take the cancer tumors out of our body and be on the hunt for other area?s of activity in the body?s system though tests, blood draws, scans, and more. Doctor?s try to bombard the body with anti-agents like chemo and radiation to ?kill? off any residual invader cells. ?A diagnosis with cancer is traumatic on the physical, spiritual and emotional body that the only resolve, at least for me, ?was to go into deep states of silence, hoping to hear what my body was trying to say it needed.

If you think back to being a baby, your body is unable to speak when there is distress, so it cry?s out for more nourishment, more rest, a change. ?When a baby has it?s needs met, it is bubbly, happy, free, curious, playful, and at ease. This is the state that can bring you back to homeostasis. Yoga takes you to a place that is holy and healed.?Yoga is an ancient tool that can take you back to your childlike qualities. ?Yoga encourages you to wiggle, listen, and explore the messages of your body.

I found yoga back in 1972 when I was cancer free and I stumbled upon Hatha yoga at the local Health Club. ?Though it was Westernized and focused mostly on the asana?s or poses, I enjoyed the stillness in the motion, I loved learning how to breathe into a pose without forcing or struggling. Yoga is completely different than aerobic exercises which I also love and recommend, however, yoga is a tool that cancer patients can use that will restore connectivity between mind, body and spirit.

When I practiced yoga I felt a deep connection to my spirit, and a sense of peace. I learned how this ancient practice helped me quiet the mind and I noticed that my body became more flexible. I couldn?t explain the freedom that I felt practicing yoga, but yoga seemed to help me release all anxiety, as I released a need to compete with other?s. It was at The Beverly Hills Health Club, on little Santa Monica Boulevard where I first experienced the nourishing benefits my body received through the consistent practice of yoga. ?At the health club there were no yoga guru?s, just a few teachers who could break down the asanas. In truth I had only my spirit and body to pay attention to. ?In yoga I experienced freedom and was encouraged to receive the nourishment of breath.

I remember that I loved yoga so much, that I would go home and sit in front of a long slim mirror assuming asana positions. Since yoga classes were only offered several times a week I enjoyed the practice of personal yoga in my apartment and used yoga in my modeling career to assume poses for photographers. ? I loved how my body turned and twisted while at the same time relaxed into poses that I only saw in the few yoga books available in the early 70?s. At the health club there were no mirrors when we were instructed on asanas or poses. Sitting in front of the mirror usually naked or draped in fabrics, ?I watched my body and noticed that by shifting my weight a little bit, ?I could not only see but feel, my body become more balanced and flexible. ?I loved yoga so much that after learning a few breathing techniques I was forever hooked and wove those asana and pranayamas into my daily life of working as a model. I practiced various types of yoga, and other forms of gentle movement for years as able.

After my diagnosis of cancer in 1980, I continued to practice yoga in the privacy of my own home. ?I truly believe that the practice of yoga can heal the body of toxics, while restoring the connectivity to spirit. ?Spirit has the potential to give you a deeper perspective of yourself as you embrace the fact that you are more than just a body. Yoga takes you to beyond the boundaries of the mind. The mind is always analyzing, and comparing, the spirit ignites growth, flexibility and restores a sense of well being.

Yoga for cancer patients is my prescription to restore health in the body/mind. ?In yoga all parts of your being are reconnected, and the healthy cells become healthier while opening all blockages in the body. ?In yoga you can express yourself more freely and all the walls of separation are torn down. Through meditative yoga, I believe cancer cell growth can be halted allowing the healthy cells to perform their functions more easily and effortlessly. ?Have the desire to be one with the body, allow your breath to nourish you, and trust that your body knows how to heal itself from a diagnosis of cancer. ?Yoga can create an open space not only in the body but in the mind, and the memory of wholeness returns. ?Yoga is also about surrendering, returning home to spirit. ?Wherever you are in your disease, take time to practice yoga ? yoga is the tool that may restore the memory of health and wholeness.

Yoga is the tool that quiets the mind, and awakens your sense perceptions. ?Allow your body to heal, practice yoga wherever you are and you just may enhance the possibility of your recovery. ? You have no choice after a diagnosis with cancer, except to go within and listen to the messages of your body. Accept and observe your body, do not judge it. ?Observe your body as it transcends and transforms into a more peaceful self through the practices of yoga. ?Don?t be attached to statistics and believe your body knows how to heal itself. Yoga is the tool that distracts you and clears the chatter of your mind and takes you into higher states of healing, all you have to do is let go and learn to be in your spirit.

From peace there is wholeness,

Deborah Shemesh

Famed conductor honored by Israel?s president

JERUSALEM (AP) ? Israel?s president has recognized Indian-born conductor Zubin Mehta for his contributions to Israeli society.

Mehta, music director for life of the Israel Philharmonic Orchestra, on Monday received Israel?s Presidential Medal of Distinction. Other winners have included Henry Kissinger.

Mehta has been the philharmonic?s director since 1977. He was also the longest-serving director of the New York Philharmonic.

In 2009, he started a music education program, Mifneh, which is Hebrew for ?turning point,? for Israel?s Arab citizens.

Mehta said at Monday?s ceremony that ?if you can sing together, you can live together.?

President Shimon Peres, a Nobel peace laureate, praised Mehta for his message of peace.

Peres said: ?Israel used to be a drama, you made us into a dramatic symphony without compromising one for the other. You harmonized us.?

LG releases Jelly Bean update schedule for some devices

LG Jelly Bean updates

LG has just released some information showing which devices will be getting updates -- and when those updates can be expected. Of course, a global press release like this doesn't do a whole lot for those of us not in Korea. But we're not gonna look this gift horse in the mouth.

First off, the Optimus LTE II will be receiving Jelly Bean starting in November, bringing UI improvements and LG apps. (Basically bringing it more toward the full out-of-box experience of the Optimus G.) The Optimus Vu and Optimus Vu II in Korea will get Jelly Bean starting in Q1 2013, with similar improvements including improved touch response. From what we can decipher in the translation of the release (sorry, working to confirm this -- someone help out in the comments if you'd like), it seems as though the Optimus G models should start receiving an update to Jelly Bean in December as well.

Based on this particular release, we're not sure about the Ice Cream Sandwich and Jelly Bean update plans for any other LG devices. That's par for the course, as U.S. carriers handle the release schedules themselves, for the most part.
