Online and interactive forms and questionnaires

Having to design for the worst case and for the majority of form-filler?s circumstances mean that many traditional forms contain questions, and sometimes whole sections, that are not relevant to them. One great feature of interactive and online forms is their ability to tailor the questions that the form-filler sees, based on their customer segment, or based on the answers they provide, for example. This article covers some of the key issues and opportunities in designing and developing online forms.

Line up the fields, and make the fields the right length
Each field that a form-filler has to complete has to have a question or label, indicating what information you want them to provide. It?s simple to run the fields next to your labels, but to visually cue users in to the start of each field, it?s best to align the labels right (and stack them vertically) and then align the fields left so that they all line up.

This makes it easier for form-fillers to see the start of each field. Also, make the length of each response field reflect the length of your expected answer. This reassures form-fillers that they are providing the information that you require.

Accordion forms
Accordion forms reveal sections to the user as they progress through it. Each section is ?collapsed? under a section strip, and the user clicks each strip to reveal the section. This is becoming a common online form mechanism, and research seems to suggest that users fill them in more quickly as they get more of an overview sense of how long the form is, and where they are in the interaction. In addition, accordion forms bring all the complex content together under one set of over-arching controls.

Progressive disclosure
This is one of the most powerful features of interactive forms ? the ability to only show the form-filler the questions that are relevant to them. Based on the form-filler?s response to certain questions, the next ?screen? will display (or the next question will animate) the next relevant question or section. For example, to ease the burden when filling in bank details in a payment form, the questions and field lengths can be varied according to the type of bank or credit card the customer has.

Make fields tolerant
There is nothing more irritating than completing a form on a banking or financial website that does not recognise a currency value because it includes a comma, a currency sign, or fails to have a decimal point: where possible, build forms that are tolerant to some extent to the sorts of errors or short-hand approach that many users have.

Polite error messaging
When a user fills in a field incorrectly, highlight the field clearly ? perhaps using red, and politely ask the user to ?Check your answers please?? Don?t imply that the user is wrong or has messed up, and make sure their errors are clearly highlighted but not glaringly so.

Use the right interface elements
Using the most appropriate response field can significantly speed up the filling-in process for people whilst also making sure data provided is accurate. If a question has one answer from a set of options, provide the options with radio buttons. If there are a number of responses and the user can select all that are relevant, provide check-boxes.

When selecting one from a defined set of responses, menus can be a good interface element. But they can also slow people down. Don?t format date of birth fields with drop downs ? form-fillers just find this irritating because their date of birth is so hard-wired in their head. If you do use drop downs, make them tolerant to allow the user to key their answer as well as using their mouse.

When designing interactive forms, consider these points and you?ll be sure to keep your customers happy.

Wall Street Journal columnist William McGurn applauds the decision by the University of Notre Dame to join in the lawsuit against the HHS contraceptive mandate. McGurn points out that with Notre Dame among the plaintiffs, it is impossible to charge that the suit is being filed only by conservative groups hostile to President Obama; after all, Notre Dame?s administration has been roundly condemned by conservatives for inviting Obama to speak at commencement.

McGurn goes on to discuss the widening gap between the Obama administration and Catholic voters. He notes that in the past, Democratic presidential candidates (including Obama) have formed campaign efforts to reach out specifically to Catholics. ?The lack of prominence of a similar Catholic effort today points to the obvious: Where can Joe Biden or other Catholic surrogates go where they will not now be on the defensive??

Thirty-two years ago this month an explosive eruption reshaped Mount Saint Helens in a matter of seconds. An earthquake under the volcano in Washington State on May 18, 1980, triggered the largest landslide in recorded history as billions of cubic meters of mountainside tumbled away, initiating a massive release of gas, lava and ash. The cataclysm killed 57 people and sent a plume some 20 kilometers into the sky.

The 1980 eruption was not totally unexpected. For the two months prior, earthquakes and steam explosions had rattled the mountain, and the north slope of the volcano had noticeably swelled outward. But interpreting just what was happening beneath the mountain to cause those shudders and belches was not possible.

Now a team in England and Germany has linked the seismic record from that era to magmatic processes beneath Mount Saint Helens by closely examining crystallized minerals formed in the volcano's innards just before eruption.

In a study appearing in the May 25 issue of Science, the researchers report that crystals of the silicate mineral orthopyroxene from 1980 and from subsequent eruptions trace various injections of magma, as well as other chemical changes, within the bowels of the volcano.

The crystals contain concentric rings of differing chemical composition. Some orthopyroxene crystals, for instance, have a magnesium-rich core surrounded by an iron-rich rim; others have an iron-rich core and a magnesium-rich rim. Each type of crystal zonation can record the conditions of the magma reservoir from which it emerged.

"We chemically fingerprint each of those zones to determine how they formed," says lead study author Kate Saunders, a volcanologist of the University of Bristol in England. The outer rim of an orthopyroxene crystal, she says, represents the most recent stage of crystal formation and typically grew just months before the crystal?s emergence in volcanic ejecta. That allowed the researchers to make precise estimates of when, and how, the crystals acquired their chemical forms. "Mount Saint Helens is really good?because the samples, we know exactly when they erupted," Saunders says.

In several cases, a flurry of crystallization matched up well with internal activity at the volcano, as inferred from seismic records. For instance, crystals with iron-rich rims increased in number in the weeks and months leading up to the May 1980 eruption, as earthquakes shook the mountain with low-frequency seismic waves. Such long-period quakes, Saunders says, are characteristic of magma giving off gas. "Previously it's been reported that iron-rich rims on orthopyroxene are due to changes in the water content of the magma, so it makes sense that if we've got degassing or fluxion of water or CO2 through the system, we may get more iron-rich rims," she says. Other crystals with magnesium-rich rims seem to mark an influx of hot magma from deep reservoirs just before eruption.

Those events are also captured in the seismic record, but the root cause of the tremors is not always clear from seismology alone. That is where the crystals can provide important corroboration?or critical insight into ancient eruptions, for which seismic records do not exist. In the case of Mount Saint Helens, the study's authors "are providing fairly convincing arguments that the periods of enhanced seismicity are related to inputs of magma," says Timothy Druitt, a volcanologist at Blaise Pascal University in Clermont?Ferrand, France. "Just because you've got seismicity doesn't mean you've got magma intruding at depth," he adds. "They're providing evidence that that's probably what happened. If you can establish that, then that helps you better interpret your seismicity.?

Fitting new skylights are a great way to achieve this, as is replacing any curtains with Venetian blinds. If your budget will permit, installing some classy French doors will also improve the amount of natural light in your home.

3. Fit in a new, squeaky clean bathroom

A downstairs loo can be an extremely cost effective means to add value to your home. The HSBC survey revealed that a new bathroom can add approximately ?3,300 to the price of your home.

A basic bathroom suite can cost as little as ?500 to ?600. You may not get an incredible stylish or luxurious bathroom, but you will probably get to choose from a range of colours that can look great your original tiles.

4. Sort out your outdoor living areas

Outdoor living spaces are a fantastic way to be able to enjoy the beauty of the outdoors within the comforts of your own home. Creating the perfect outdoor space that is inviting, comfortable and peaceful can be extremely useful when looking to sell your property.

To make your outdoor living areas shine, you should try and fit some new paving stones, planting some flowers, tidying up your lawns, purchase some new garden furniture, and install some new exterior doors.

Things not to do

Do not put a swimming pool into the garden of a house that you are trying to sell. They are the least wanted home improvement, as they take up space and are costly to maintain.

As previously mentioned, a well maintained outdoor area can help you sell your house. But there is no need to spend a significant amount of money on new decking or landscape gardening, as this will not add too much value to your property.

Hello! First of all, this sounds like a really awesome roleplay, and I'd love to join. I have one quick question, though. The fight against cancer is not won in a single battle: Long after a cancer has been beaten into remission, it can return. The reason for this is under debate, and much is unclear. New research led by Weizmann Institute scientists shows that, at least for one type of blood cancer, the source of cancer recurrence is in a set of cells that do not proliferate as quickly as regular cancer cells, and thus able to survive chemotherapy. The findings, which appeared today in the journal Blood, have some important implications for the future of the war on cancer.

Cancer involves a breakdown in the mechanism that regulates the pace of cell division. When this happens, cells divide rapidly, leading to unchecked growth that overruns the body. The most common chemotherapy drugs are those which specifically attack cells that are undergoing rapid division, and these, indeed, often destroy all the cancer and cure the patient.

But there are also quite a few leukemia patients who go through chemotherapy only to have the cancer return. Why does this happen? Several explanations have been proposed. One is that the chemotherapy does not kill every last cancer cell, leaving a few to continue dividing out of control until the disease returns in full force. A second explanation proposes that chemotherapy does get all the regular cancer cells, but there is another type of cancer cell that hides in the body. As opposed to the rapidly dividing majority of cancer cells, these undergo slow division, enabling them to evade the chemotherapy drugs. These insidious cells can give rise to new rapidly-dividing cancer cells, which is why they are known as "cancer stem cells."

Which explanation is correct? The debate is an important one because, if the first explanation holds true, improving upon the existing treatments might help, while the second implies that a completely different approach to treatment will be needed to root out the slowly dividing cancer stem cells.

To attempt to resolve that debate, the team of Prof. Ehud Shapiro of the Weizmann Institute's Biological Chemistry, and Applied Mathematics and Computer Sciences Departments, worked with scientists and physicians from Rambam Medical Center and the Technion, both in Haifa. They used a method of reconstructing cell lineage trees that has been developed over the past few years in Shapiro's lab. This method is based on the fact that the genetic material in different body cells accumulates unique mutations during cell division, and these mutations are passed on to daughter cells during cell division. By comparing mutations, one can map out cells' detailed family trees, and thus determine how far back they share a common ancestor. The end product of this analysis is a tree that reconstructs the genealogy of the cells from their earliest forebears at the base of the tree to the youngest cells at the tips of the branches.

To reconstruct the cancer cell lineage tree, the team used two sets of blood samples: the first taken from leukemia patients right after the disease was diagnosed, and the second from those patients who had undergone chemotherapy and in whom the cancer had returned. The researchers could then trace the relationships of the recurring cancer cells back to see if they descended from the original cancer cells. The lineage tree showed that, at least in some of the patients, the source of the renewed cancer was not in the rapidly proliferating cancer cells, but rather in cells that were close to the root of the tree. These cells had only divided a few times. In other words, the cancer arose from cells that divide very slowly, making them resistant to the attacks of chemotherapy drugs.

Shapiro: "We know that in many cases, chemotherapy alone is not able to cure leukemia. Our results suggest that to completely eliminate it, we must look for a treatment that will not only eliminate the rapidly dividing cells, but also target the cancer stem cells that are resistant to conventional treatment."

Army Sgt. Tim Smith went on routine security missions, looking for weapons and counter-insurgents near Fallujah, Iraq, during the region?s worst spasm of violence. He returned to America in 2007 with post-traumatic stress and no job. After earning a master?s degree in social work, he decided to open a business that would hire veterans for jobs that would maximize a soldier's obsessive attention to detail and willingness to follow orders to the letter.

Cleaning, he decided, fit the bill.

Patriot Commercial Cleaning in St. Louis, Mo., opened last year with $5,400 from Smith?s savings and a $3,900 gift from Work Vessels for Veterans, a nonprofit that paid for the licenses, insurance and equipment for the company?s first big contract.

In the first year, Patriot Commercial made $23,500 through six contracts. This year Smith has 12 contracts that will pull in $182,000.

He was able to grow the business, he says, after landing a big contract to clean an academy. The nonprofit loaned Smith?s business an additional $10,000 for the payroll, allowing Smith to hire on five veterans.

?That money really helped us get established,?? Smith says. ? It?s difficult to get a loan from a bank for any business that is under 2 years old.??

Expanding the Scope

Smith is one of 600 veterans that the nonprofit has helped since John Niekrash, a Connecticut commercial lobsterman, and a few other businessmen decided to guide veterans back into the civilian world. The nonprofit gave away its first work ?vessel,? a boat, in 2008, to help a vet start fishing for a living.

Soon, Dave Mason, the songwriter and a founder of the band Traffic, contacted Niekrash and asked, "Why does a vessel have to be a boat?"

?It hit such a chord that we realized quickly, wow, there?s no need for a vessel to be a boat,?? Niekrash says. ?It?s anything to help make that transition.??

The two friends have donated tools, cars, vans, trucks and lots of laptops, especially for veterans heading to school. The group has even donated land, which now is Veterans Farm in Jacksonville, Fla., run by a veteran who employs combat vets.

Getting Vets Onboard

Niekrash asks that interested vets present a business plan, or, if they?re planning to study, details about their school program. ?From tools to cars to vans to trucks, whatever they need to make that transition, we?re there to assist them.??

Niekrash, who is not a vet, says it?s important for many of these young men and women to start their own jobs, and not just because the double-digit unemployment rate for young people.

"When [they] come back to little towns, they can?t find work, and they?ve lost that sense of team and unity they had when they were fighting together,?? he says. ? What helps them heal is helping other vets. That?s what drives these guys.??

While the primary focus of her latest media push has been on her movie, Zhao is also using her movie to promote the new Chinese MMO game Taoyuan (?? or ?Peach Garden?).

Taoyuanis a cute, anime-style Three Kingdoms online game. The art style for the game is almost reminiscent of Nexon?s Gunbound and Disney?s Mulan, with colourful, big-headed characters. The depth of Zhao?s involvement with the game aside from gracing posters isn?t exactly clear, but in her recent interviews, she has been tying Taoyuan and Chinese online gaming to her movie.

The Qing Chunqi made Zhao an instant online sensation. The Qing Chunqi series is a romantic comedy about Chinese youth and their struggles to find love and themselves. Originally Zhao rose to fame because her ?sweet and innocent? look was apparently perfect for pitching products such as Coca-Cola and milk. Soon after her rise to commercial fame, 24-year-old Zhao became involved with film and television. It was the Qing Chunqi series that made her.

According to Zhao, this newest installation to the series will have a portion dedicated to gaming adolescences, in particular a documentary style short on players of Taoyuan, a game that only went beta last week.

?Qing Chunqi 3 is the first film that reflects the living conditions of the online population, allowing them to speak their own stories,? said Zhao, a long time online gamer. ?The story is based on the true story of the Taoyuan players. Gamers as a group is very large, but have always been socially neglected, demonized, and even abandoned. What Qing Chunqi 3 does is it restores the true face of the online populations.?

On paper the new movie looks unremarkable and bland but with its inclusion of China?s gaming youth and youth culture, it might drive some people to theatres, and maybe some players to Taoyuan. If they haven?t already been seduced by Zhao, that is.

Millions of small investors have trimmed their investments in stocks after seeing their 401(k) accounts pulverized by the market plunge in 2008-09. The May 2010 flash crash ? in which $1 trillion briefly vanished from the stock market ? served as another flashing yellow caution sign.

Facebook, with its worldwide popularity, was seen as a chance to rekindle popular interest in stocks when its shares began trading publicly last week.

Then the stock flopped. Investor enthusiasm was expected to be red-hot, but many backed away amid trading glitches on the Nasdaq, widespread news reports of insider selling and nagging questions about the company?s future prospects.

In the aftermath, it also became clear that big investors and wealthy clients had been warned the company?s financial outlook had weakened. Instead of rekindling interest in stocks, Facebook?s debut fueled long-running concerns about how the stock market works.

?This has proved the game is rigged,? said Charles Geisst, a finance professor and Wall Street historian at Manhattan College. ?There?s just too many questions about the integrity of the stock market, and I think people are starting to realize this ? individuals, at least.?

Retail investors reportedly got 25 percent of Facebook?s 421 million shares in the initial public offering. The value of that allotment has declined by more than $500 million, based on Facebook?s closing price of $33.03 a share Thursday.

Regulators and congressional investigators have begun probes into what went wrong, looking into questions over information distributed ahead of the IPO. Morgan Stanley and other underwriters warned privileged clients that their analysts had grown sour on Facebook?s revenue growth potential. They failed to telegraph the same information to retail clients and the general public.

Information affords a crucial trading edge on Wall Street. Regulators have tried to level the playing field for years.

A decade ago, regulators led by then-Attorney General Eliot Spitzer discovered widespread manipulation of Wall Street analysts? reports. He exposed a long practice on Wall Street in which analysts would write favorable research so their banks could win investment banking business.

?Market theory is very simple,? Spitzer said. ?You can?t give false and misleading material information to people, where you know it?s false and you correct it only to some but not to others.?

Morgan Stanley declined to comment, but it has said its IPO procedures were ?in compliance with all applicable regulations.?

Giving well-connected firms an inside track has been one of the ways that big Wall Street firms attract and keep big clients. These clients are powerful profit drivers, and banks tend to give their best customers the best deals.

?These people give them more money in fees and commissions than others,? said Ernest Badway, a former U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission enforcement attorney who is now a white-collar defense lawyer in New York and New Jersey.

?Because of that ? they?re part of a great revenue stream ? they?re going to try to give every single advantage that they can to those particular people,? he said.

Large institutions and wealthy investors have a symbiotic relationship with Wall Street bankers. ?The retail guy is at the end of the queue,? Geisst said. ?He can?t do anybody any favors.?

In April, the SEC settled a somewhat similar case against Goldman Sachs involving precious tips to favored clients.

To generate more revenue, the giant Wall Street investment bank?s analysts and traders held ?huddles? to share market commentary and trading ideas. During morning conference calls, Goldman passed along inside information to a select group of about 180 hedge fund and investment management clients.

Goldman, which brought in $37 billion in revenue last year, paid a $22 million fine to settle the case.

SEC rules generally require public companies to disclose ?material? information to all investors once they disclose the same information to analysts and other market participants. But the rule governing fair disclosure ? known as Regulation FD ? has an exemption that allows companies to selectively disclose information while they are on ?road shows? pitching IPOs to prospective investors, said John Coffee, a Columbia Law School professor who is an expert in securities regulations.

?There should be a rule that you can?t disclose information at a road show unless you?re willing to simultaneously disclose it to retail investors,? Coffee said.

Government inquiries have only just begun, and no one involved in the process has been accused of any wrongdoing. What rule changes, if any, may result from the Facebook IPO remain to be seen. But Spitzer and others say it?s a reminder that the big boys still rule Wall Street.

?The small guy is not getting a fair shot in the market,? Spitzer said. ?That unfortunately has been true for too many years.?

WordPress plugin Facebook Like Thumbnail Updates

I have updated my WordPress plugin to fix Facebook Like Thumbnails to version 0.2 which I am sure will make the existing users happy!

Some of the users who quickly upgraded might be facing issues because of a silly mistake on my part. If the plugin has disappeared from the plugins listing, then you would have to delete the folder ?facebook-like-thumbnail? folder in your plugins folder (/wp-content/plugins/) and then reinstall the plugin by typing ?Facebook Like Thumbnail? in Add New Plugins screen. I apologise for the issue, please excuse me, I am not used to pushing updates to public repositories.

The plugin now features an options pages which can be found under Settings > Facebook Like Thumbnail. You can specify your default thumbnail image on that page, no more code edits are required. This was a necessary move as the users would have to edit the plugin to specify their default image after every upgrade.

The plugin now supports featured thumbnails and NextGEN galleries (other than the slideshow ones).

The plugin picks the thumbnail in the following order (whichever is found first)

• If its a post or page
  • Featured Thumbnail
  • First Image in the post
  • Default
• If its a Front Page or Search Page
• Anything else
  • First image in the first post of the loop

Adding the author avatar on author pages to be used as thumbnail and ignoring smilies as a possible match for thumbnail are on my To-do lists. If you have any suggestions, comments section is all yours.

Also the plugin can be totally uninstalled by using the delete option from WordPress dashboard, it won?t leave anything behind in the database.
