"Raindrops Keep Fallin'" songwriter Hal David dies at 91

LOS ANGELES (Reuters) - Hal David, a lyricist who along with composer Burt Bacharach took the pop world by storm in the 1960s with hits such as "Raindrops Keep Fallin' on my Head" and "Walk on By," died in Los Angeles on Saturday at age 91, a representative said.

David died at Cedars-Sinai Medical Center of complications from a stroke, said Jim Steinblatt, spokesman for the American Society of Composers, Authors and Publishers, or ASCAP.

Earlier this year, David and Bacharach received the Gershwin Prize for Popular Song from the Library of Congress, during a White House musical tribute.

David, a native of Brooklyn, New York, began his songwriting career in the late 1940s by collaborating with writers he had met at Manhattan's famed Brill Building, which at the time was the center of the pop industry.

He started working with Bacharach in the late 1950s and their songs were recorded by such artists as Frank Sinatra, Marty Robbins, Tom Jones and Barbra Streisand.

The singer most associated with the songwriting duo is Dionne Warwick, who rose to fame by scoring a number of Top 10 hits in the 1960s with material from David and Bacharach.

Bacharach's and David's song "Raindrops Keep Fallin' on my Head" was written for the 1969 movie "Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid" and won the Academy Award for Best Song.

They also won a Grammy in 1969 for best score from an original cast show album for their Broadway musical "Promises, Promises," which included the song "I'll Never Fall In Love Again." The play returned to Broadway in 2010 starring Kristin Chenoweth and Sean Hayes.

The songwriting duo's other hits included "What the World Needs Now Is Love," "I Say a Little Prayer," "Do You Know the Way to San Jose," and "(They Long to Be) Close to You," which is best known from a version by the Carpenters.

David and Bacharach parted ways in the early 1970s. David went on to work with other composers. With Albert Hammond, he wrote the hit "To All the Girls I've Loved Before."

Eunice David, the songwriter's widow, who married him in 1988, said she used to watch him sit in an old rocking chair and write on a legal pad.

"All of a sudden, I'd look up and there it was filled with lyrics," she told Reuters. "It never ceased to amaze me how that happened."

Songwriter Paul Williams, president and chairman of ASCAP, said in a statement that David was "simple, concise and poetic."

"It is no wonder that so many of his lyrics have become part of our everyday vocabulary and his songs ... the backdrop of our lives," Williams said.

David served as president of ASCAP from 1980 to 1986.

His parents were immigrants from Austria. His older brother, Mack David also achieved success by composing or co-writing a number of songs, including the 1944 "Candy" and the English version of Edith Piaf's "La Vie En Rose."

David is survived by his wife, sons Jim and Craig, three grandchildren and two stepsons.

White House reveals 'Ale to the Chief' beer recipes

Barack Obama promised and the White House delivered, revealing recipes for the president's official microbrewed honey beers, following an Internet campaign.

"With public excitement about the White House beer fermenting such a buzz, we decided we better hop right to it," said Sam Kass, one of Obama's chefs, on the White House blog.

The "Ale to the Chief," he punned, is "as far as we know ... the first alcohol brewed or distilled on the White House grounds."

"George Washington brewed beer and distilled whiskey at Mount Vernon and Thomas Jefferson made wine, but there's no evidence that any beer has been brewed in the White House," he continued.

"Inspired by home brewers from across the country, last year President Obama bought a home brewing kit for the kitchen" at the White House, the chef explained.

With advice from White House staffers who brew in their own spare time, the chefs honed a recipe -- tweaked from a local brew shop's offering -- which features honey "tapped from the first ever bee-hive on the South Lawn" in the White House garden.

On the blog, the complete recipe was given with precise directions. A video shows the different steps of the brewing process in the White House kitchens.

Obama, who participated Wednesday in a question and answer session over social media network Reddit, had promised that the recipe would be "out soon!" adding that "I can tell from first hand experience, it is tasty."

More than 12,000 people had signed a petition asking for the White House's special brew on the "We the People" page of the White House web site, which is dedicated to grassroots petitions.

The recipe can be found at: www.whitehouse.gov/blog/2012/09/01/ale-chief-white-house-beer-recipe.

Israelis say UN report strengthens Iran warnings

JERUSALEM (AP) ? Israeli officials said on Friday that a new United Nations report adds credibility to their warnings about Iran, as tensions grow between the Jewish state and its allies over how to tackle Tehran's suspect nuclear program.

The report by the U.N. nuclear agency, which emerged on Thursday, concluded that Iran had stepped up the installation of centrifuges capable of making weapons-grade material in an underground bunker at its Fordo underground facility, safe from most aerial attacks.

The U.N. report also said Iran has effectively shut down inspections of a separate site ? the Parchin military complex ? suspected of being used for nuclear weapons-related experiments, by shrouding it from spy satellite view with a covering.

It drew rapid criticism from Iranian Foreign Minister Ali Akbar Salehi, who said Friday the assertion about Parchin "does not make any technical sense." Iran denies the West's claims that it is seeking to develop weapons but its government makes no secret that it sees expansion of its nuclear program as a right.

An Israeli official said that the U.N report "confirms what Prime Minister (Benjamin) Netanyahu has been talking about for years now, that the Iranian nuclear program is designed to achieve a nuclear weapon." He spoke on condition of anonymity because he was not authorized to speak to reporters.

Israel has been weighing unilateral military action against Iranian nuclear facilities amid faltering international efforts to persuade Tehran to scale back its uranium enrichment, a process that would be key to bomb-making.

The United States opposes Israeli strikes. The strain between Washington and its longtime Israeli ally has been on full display this month, with a top U.S. military officer, Gen. Martin Dempsey, twice speaking out against a go-it-alone strike. He was quoted on Thursday as saying he would "not want to be complicit" in such an assault.

Washington worries that a premature Israeli attack could send global oil prices soaring and touch off a broad conflict possibly drawing in U.S. forces.

Many Israeli officials see U.S. reluctance as linked to the strength of American airpower, which can successfully hit more difficult targets and gives Washington a greater window for action.

But given Israel's more limited military means, the U.N. report could reinforce the view there that time for it to act independently is quickly running out, as key elements of Iran's nuclear program may soon be impervious to airstrikes from Israel's own aircraft.

Israeli leaders have said repeatedly that their country reserves the right to act on its own and will not leave what it sees as an essential security issue in the hands of others, even a powerful ally like the U.S. Israel considers Iran to be its most formidable enemy, given its nuclear program, its repeated calls for Israel's destruction and its proxy militant groups based near Israel's borders.

The U.N. says Iran has installed 1,000 centrifuges at the Fordo site since May, doubling the number there.

Israeli defense officials said Friday that they were surprised by the pace of the increase, but said the information contained in the U.N. report would not influence the country's decision whether to attack and if so, when. They also spoke on condition of anonymity because they were not authorized to discuss confidential assessments of the Iranian program.

Some nuclear experts have cautioned against concluding too much from the increase. Senior diplomats outside Israel familiar with the report said it was unclear how many of the centrifuges are operational. They also said it was unclear whether the machines would be used to produce reactor fuel or warhead-capable material.

In his comments to the official news agency IRNA on Friday, Iran's Salehi said the report wrongly accused his country of trying to clean up traces of nuclear experiments at the Parchin base even though removing radioactive residue would be impossible.

"Whoever has expertise in this field understands that these are offering excuses," he said. "Such issues cannot be eradicated through cleaning."

U.N. officials however have said they never expected to find radioactive residue at Parchin and were looking for other signs of testing.

Iranian state television said Friday that a summit of the 120-member Nonaligned Movement in Tehran supported its right to the peaceful use of nuclear energy. But it was not immediately clear whether the text of the conference's final declaration backed Iran's claims that its nuclear program is solely for those peaceful purposes, or simply asserted a general right to produce nuclear energy. Tehran had been hoping to use the summit to show that it is not isolated diplomatically.

Before leaving the conference, U.N. Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon told reporters that, as the head of the movement for the next three years, Iran has "a very important opportunity ... not only (to) raise their political profile in the international community, but also (to) demonstrate their leadership to exercise a moderate and constructive role in regional and international issues."

"I have urged the government of Iran to take concrete steps to build international confidence in the exclusively peaceful nature of its nuclear program," he said.

SALISBURY - New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie is coming to Salisbury in September to support Pat McCrory's campaign for governor of North Carolina.

Christie will attend a 'Carolina Comeback' rally for the former Charlotte mayor at 3 p.m. on Thursday, Sept. 13, McCrory's campaign announced this afternoon. The event will be held at Catawba College, where McCrory graduated with degrees in education and political science.

"Governor Christie is a strong, inspirational and visionary leader who is not afraid of telling people the truth and treating people like adults," McCrory said in a press release. "Unfortunately, while other governors from around the country have been showing leadership and implementing reforms, North Carolina has had a bystander in the governor's office. I look forward to having Governor Christie with me on the campaign trail to talk about the kind of strong leadership and vision we need in the governor's office to start a Carolina comeback."

Christie will also attend a Charlotte fundraiser for the McCrory campaign on Sept. 13. Campaign officials said more scheduling details will be coming.

Christie raised money for McCrory's campaign in November in Greensboro.

Christie also delivered Tuesday's keynote speech at the Republican National Convention in Tampa, Fla., which McCrory did not attend.

According to the Associated Press, McCrory has said he originally planned to go to the convention for one day but decided to spend time campaigning in western North Carolina.

Angola votes, Dos Santos favourite to win

Angolans voted Friday in the country's third election since independence, with President Jose Eduardo dos Santos expected to extend his grip on power in the oil-rich nation despite a resurgent opposition.

Most of the more than 10,000 polling stations set up at schools across the country, twice the size of France, shut on time and vote counting started immediately. The electoral authority said some polls stayed open late, without elaborating.

Voting saw a few hiccups but was a dramatic improvement on the last elections in 2008 when the ballot had to be extended into a second day due to chaos at polling stations.

Pedro Verona Pires, chief of the African Union's observer team, described the poll's organisation as "satisfactory", adding that "the voters' state of mind is good".

"Everyone agrees that the elections this year were better organised than in 2008," Pires, who is also the former president of Cape Verde, told AFP.

The opposition Unita party had expressed fears that its supporters would be turned away from the ballot box due to problems with the voter roll, while not all of its monitors were allowed into the polling stations.

Voters were picking lawmakers for the 220-seat parliament. The leader of the the party that takes the vote automatically becomes the head of state.

There is little doubt that Dos Santos will extend his 33-year reign. His People's Movement for the Liberation of Angola (MPLA) took more than 80 percent of the vote in 2008 polls deemed legitimate by observers despite the troubles at the polling stations.

Dos Santos has used his decades in office to centralise most power in his hands. His family, particularly his daughter Isabel, has capitalised on Angola's oil boom to build an international business empire.

He has also poured billions into rebuilding Angola after 41 years of warfare, with 14 years of armed struggle against colonial power Portugal turning into a 27-year civil war after independence in 1975.

He has used his dominance over state media to showcase roads, dams, schools and clinics built since the fighting ended a decade ago.

Life in Angola has by most measures improved.

The economy over the past decade was among the fastest-growing in the world. Per capita gross domestic product was nearly $1,900 in 2009 -- triple that of 2000. Life expectancy went up from about 40 in 1980 to above 51 now.

The main opposition Union for the Total Independence of Angola (Unita) argues that the economic gains have mainly benefited an elite showered with oil riches, while 55 percent of the population still live in dire poverty.

Party leader Isaias Samakuva has criticised the electoral process, saying many names on the voter roll could not be authenticated.

"I did my civic duty, even if we are still not satisfied with the electoral process," he said after voting.

After taking only 10 percent of the vote in 2008, the former rebel movement needs a strong showing to prove that it remains relevant in modern politics.

But that task has been complicated by a dramatic split in April.

The charismatic Abel Chivukuvuku broke away to form the Casa party along with a top-level MPLA defector, smaller opposition groups and prominent figures in civil society.

Casa has made in-roads by courting young voters with promises of jobs and better living conditions, striking a chord with the youth who over the past year have staged a series of unprecedented protests against Dos Santos.

Diogo Miguel Bernardo, 31, unemployed, who was turned away because he had registered in a different part of the country, said he would have voted Casa.

"Casa is a party that can bring change to the country. We can't have a situation with the same person in power for one, two, three, 30 years."

Preliminary results will be released from Saturday afternoon, the head of the National Electoral Commission said. Final results were only expected next week.

Au Pair, anyone? - Under 5 | OHbaby!

Having a live-in au pair seems like a brilliant solution for families requiring childcare and some extra help around the house, but what exactly is involved and what does it cost? We asked Au Pair Link to explain the basics.

?

What is an Au Pair?
An Au Pair is typically a young person from abroad, employed by a family (often referred to as a "Host Family" in the industry), to care for their children and help with light housework in return for a monetary allowance, room and board.

Not only does an Au Pair provide in-home, dedicated childcare, they also give families the convenience of help around the home. Other Au Pair responsibilities can include:

  • Light housework around the home
  • Helping your child/children take care of their belongings and tidy their room
  • Taking your child to playgroups, school and other activities such as sport
  • Washing and organising your child's clothes throughout the working week.

What are the benefits?

  • Help and support - An Au Pair gives busy families an "extra pair of hands" around the home. Not only does an Au Pair provide dedicated (one-on-one) childcare but they also help with other household duties.
  • Affordability - $200 net per week for up to 40 hours of childcare. You don't pay per child or per hour. Also, by registering with a professional agency you have access to the 20 Hours ECE and WINZ childcare subsidies including OSCAR (after school care subsidy).
  • Convenience and Flexibility - An Au Pair provides childcare in the best location of all - home. No more dropping off to day care centres. As a live-in caregiver, your Au Pair is there to help when you need them most.
  • Cultural Experience - Having someone from a different culture caring for your children is fun and educational. Au Pairs often become like another member of the family and it is not uncommon for Au Pairs and Host Families to stay in touch for years afterward.

How much does it cost?

A typical Au Pair wage is between $180 - $220 net per week for up to 40 hours of work (excluding tax, room and board). Because an Au Pair is an employee of their Host Family, they enjoy the same rights and benefits under New Zealand employment law as any other employee in New Zealand. As such, the Host Family is required to comply with all relevant New Zealand tax and employment law, including (but not limited to):

  • The Employment Relations Act
  • The Holidays Act
  • The Minimum Wage Act
  • The Health and Safety in Employment Act

A reputable Au Pair agency will provide you with qualified advice and support in respect of your obligations as an employer - and even a payroll service. It is important to remember that the Au Pair employment package is taxable - income tax is not paid solely on the wage component - it must be paid on room and board as well.

Why should I use a professional Au Pair Agency?

Simply put, by choosing a professional Au Pair Agency, you are safeguarding your children against any potential risks. In August 2012, the International Au Pair Association (IAPA) issued a formal statement warning parents against matching with an Au Pair privately through the newspapers or other web-based services. You can read IAPA's full statement here.

A reputable Au Pair agency should provide:

  • A comprehensive Au Pair and Host Family screening process - make sure you ask the Au Pair agency how their Au Pairs are screened and vetted overseas
  • Organisation and support for Au Pairs when booking flights, visas and insurance
  • Professional contracts and employment agreements
  • A guarantee or re-match policy - if your initial Au Pair placement does not work out
  • Ongoing and local support - activities, coffee groups, playgroups and mediation services. Make sure you ask the Au Pair agency if they have support staff in your region, so local help is available when you need it
  • An orientation course for Au Pairs once they arrive in New Zealand.

Home based Early Childhood Education

Some Au Pair agencies also offer home based Early Childhood Education (ECE) and support services. This means you can access qualified ECE teacher support, local playgroups, activities and events, childcare training and free educational resources. If you have children under 5 years of age, ask your Au Pair agency if they are licensed by the Ministry of Education as a Home based ECE provider. You can also get access to subsidies like 20 Hours ECE.
