Sher Valenzuela: After tonight, you will know her name

TAMPA, Fla. - Most people in the United States probably identify the singer Cher as the most popular woman with that first name. But soon, that could all change.

Tonight, Republicans believe one of their star candidates, Sher Valenzuela, will burst into the national spotlight when she delivers a primetime address during the Republican National Convention.

Valenzuela, who is running for lieutenant governor of Delaware, is a small businesswoman who runs an industrial upholstery facility that manufactures everything from padding for Major League Baseball umpires to bulletproof vests for the Israeli military and protective covering for the U.S. military's Boeing V-22 Osprey.

Tonight, she has one of the best speaking slots. She is slated to address the convention for eight minutes beginning at 7:50 p.m. ET on the moral defense of free enterprise.

But her newfound glory hasn't excited everyone. Los Angeles Mayor Antonio Villaragosa told reporters today in Tampa, Fla., "You can't just tout out a brown face or a Spanish surname and expect the people are going to vote for your party or your candidate."

Those comments were perceived as a direct assault on Valenzuela, whose husband, Eli, is Latino. Valenzuela is white.

Still, the mayor's comments didn't appear to faze Valenzuela.

"They've got a lot of things going on in their own state, in their own backyard," she told ABC News Tuesday afternoon. "We have enough to worry about with what's happening in our nation to worry about what's happening in California. Keep your feet grounded in your own backyard and together we're going to build communities that work."

Valenzuela, who has never before sought political office, drew a parallel between her candidacy and the leadership qualities of Mitt Romney.

"We're looking at somebody that has a solid understanding of what it means to balance a budget and who has a track record of supporting small businesses," she said. "I relate to what Gov. Romney brings. I know what it means to balance a budget. I know what it means to write a paycheck and not only cash one. I know what it means to create a job, and I know what it means to struggle with my business every day in terms of keeping our doors open any day but definitely in a difficult economy."

The convention's theme tonight, "We Built It," has also attracted some criticism toward Valenzuela, whose business employs about 70 people, because it accepted federal loans and contracts. Valenzuela said that when she launched her business from her garage, she applied for a Small Business Administration-backed loan.

"I had to put my house on the line for that loan and, thankfully, I didn't lose my house and, thankfully, I was able to create the jobs that I committed to provide," she said. "It's businesses versus big government. We don't need big government. We need a more efficient, lean government, and that's exactly the kind of government we intend to deliver."

"It doesn't matter if you have a D, or an I or an R after your name if you have a job - a J-O-B," she added. "It really matters to people that they have an opportunity to contribute to their economy in a very meaningful way, and this is outside party lines. So we believe that these are the solutions that America is craving."

So does she have any nerves heading into what is likely the biggest moment of her life?

"Of course," she laughed. "I wouldn't be human if I didn't say that was humbled by this, but I just expect to be myself - and everybody that's here, I'm sure, will relate to that."

Giada's Rigatoni With Eggplant Puree - The Blog - Cooking Channel

Aug 29

Our season-long garden party Summer Fest 2012 welcomes food and garden bloggers to feature garden-to-table recipes and tips. We?ll feature favorite garden-to-table recipes and tips to help you enjoy the bounty, whether you?re harvesting your own goodies or buying them fresh from the market. Fresh this week: eggplant.

I?m a big fan of eggplant no matter how it?s prepared: sliced in half and grilled to charred perfection, cubed and roasted, or sliced thin and wrapped around ricotta cheese. But not everyone loves the consistency of this meaty vegetable. Giada has a great recipe for those?who might otherwise be eggplant-averse: Rigatoni With Eggplant Puree.

Coat cubed eggplant, cherry tomatoes and garlic with olive oil, salt and pepper and toss to combine. You can really use any type of tomato but cherries this time of year are decadently sweet.

Roast the vegetables on a baking sheet until the eggplant is golden. If you?re anti-oven during the summer, they?re great on the grill as well.

Puree the vegetables with mint leaves, olive oil and reserved pasta water from your boiled rigatoni. Toss with the cooked pasta and Parmesan cheese before serving. Sprinkle with toasted pine nuts.

New mileage standards would double fuel efficiency

(AP) ? The Obama administration has finalized regulations that will force automakers to nearly double the average gas mileage of all new cars and trucks they sell by 2025.

The rules mean that all new vehicles would have to get an average of 54.5 miles per gallon in 13 years, up from 28.6 mpg at the end of last year. The requirements will be phased in gradually between now and then, and automakers could be fined if they don't comply.

The regulations, announced Tuesday, will change the cars and trucks sold in U.S. showrooms, with the goal of slashing greenhouse gas emissions and fuel consumption. Automakers will need to improve gasoline-powered engines, and sell more alternative fuel vehicles. Critics say the rules will make cars unaffordable by adding thousands of dollars to the sticker price.

The "Corporate Average Fuel Economy," or CAFE standards, will vary by automaker depending on the mix of models they sell. The requirements will be lower for companies such as General Motors, Ford and Chrysler, which offer more pickup trucks. The standards can be lowered by the government if people suddenly start buying less-efficient vehicles in the future, although few expect that to happen.

The administration says the latest changes will save families up to $7,400 on fuel over the life of a vehicle. The standards also are the biggest step the U.S. government has ever taken toward cutting greenhouse gas emissions, Environmental Protection Agency Administrator Lisa Jackson said. Tailpipe emissions from cars and light trucks will be halved by 2025.

President Barack Obama said the new fuel standards "represent the single most important step" his administration has taken to reduce U.S. dependence on foreign oil.

But Republican presidential nominee Mitt Romney has opposed the standards, and his campaign on Tuesday said any savings at the pump would be wiped out by the rising cost of cars and trucks.

Already, automakers have committed to an average of 35.5 mpg by model year 2016 under a deal reached with the Obama administration three years ago.

In the arcane world of government regulations, the rules don't mean that each new car or truck will get 54.5 mpg. The average vehicle will get closer to 40 mpg in real-world driving. Automakers will be able to sell pickup trucks and less-efficient vehicles as long as that's offset somewhat by smaller vehicles that already can get upward of 40 mpg.

Automakers can reduce the mileage they're required to get with credits for selling natural gas and electric vehicles, changing air conditioning fluid to one that pollutes less, and adding stop-start circuits that temporarily shut off the engine at stop lights.

At showrooms, dealers are likely to offer more efficient gas-electric hybrids, natural gas vehicles and electric cars. There also will be smaller motors, lighter bodies and more devices to save fuel.

Automakers have already been adding technology to boost the efficiency of gasoline-powered engines, mainly because people want to spend less at the pump. Fuel economy is the top factor people consider when buying a car in the U.S., according to the research firm J.D. Power and Associates. The national average for gasoline hit $3.76 Tuesday, the highest price ever for this time of year.

Fuel efficiency has been rising for the past five years because government regulations and high gas prices have encouraged smaller vehicles and engines. The average new car now goes almost four miles farther on a gallon of gas than it did in October of 2007, according to the University of Michigan Transportation Research Institute.

Market demand for more efficient vehicles already has pushed the auto industry to boost mileage with an array of technology, said Roland Hwang, transportation director for the Natural Resources Defense Council. "We're pleasantly surprised to see how fast the industry is moving," he said.

The administration estimates that the new rules, combined with those that began in 2011, will raise the cost of a new car about $2,800 by 2025. The estimates are based on 2010 dollars. But the government says the net savings from the requirements still will be $3,500 to $5,000 because people will spend less on gas.

The administration also predicts that the new regulations will cost the auto industry about $135 billion from 2017 to 2025.

The new rules were adopted after an agreement between the administration and 13 automakers last year. That's a change from the past, when automakers fought the regulations, saying they cost too much.

Industry leaders repeatedly told the Obama administration that they wanted one nationwide fuel standard, fearing separate mileage standards from California and other states.

"They wanted certainty so that as they invest in the future they will know what rules they are playing by," the EPA's Jackson said.

Fuel economy standards were first imposed on U.S. automakers in the 1970s. The aim was to make cars more efficient and reduce the nation's dependence on foreign oil at time when the Arab oil embargo was creating gasoline shortages. The administration says this is the first update in decades.

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration will enforce the standards, calculating the average mileage of cars sold by each automaker. Automakers can be fined if they don't comply.

The requirements, which can be imposed without congressional approval, will be reviewed in 2018 and could be reduced if the technology isn't available to meet the standards.

The rules are tough, but General Motors, the largest U.S. car company, will roll out features to comply, spokesman Greg Martin said.

"Consumers want higher fuel efficiency in their cars and trucks, and GM is going to give it to them," he said.

Idle Hands: Selling your collaborative novel

To be a writer is to be a salesperson. Writing is a respected profession but no one is going to fall at your feet, begging to publish or even read your work, just because you?ve written something. Once your novel is complete, you will have to sell it yourself. That might initially be to an agent. If and when you?ve gained an agent, you still need to be constantly selling. Your agent will need your help to sell your book to a publisher. Your publisher will need your help to sell your book to the public. Your skills as a salesperson will be required at book launches, readings, book signings, Q&A sessions, workshops, conventions. Don?t be surprised if you end up taking your wares to sell directly to your readership at local libraries and schools. You are selling your book but you are also selling yourself. Even though I find it nauseating to have to think and speak in such terms, you will need to sell yourself as a brand. People want their horror writers to be cool and darkly funny. People want their romance writers to be insightful and personable. People want their science fiction writers to be very, very intelligent. I?m not, for one moment, suggest you pretend to be someone you?re not because that?s just going to end in disaster. I?m suggesting that you accentuate and make more of those aspects of your personality and personal history that relate to your work. If you are an ex-SAS soldier and write thrillers, it would be daft to not mention your past profession in your dealings with others. If you are an ex-SAS soldier and write children?s picture books, it?s probably best to keep quiet about it. Just say you like the great outdoors and travel a lot. Something like that. The issue of branding is very important for collaborative writers. You are a gestalt entity. You are not the sum of your parts. The similarities you share are interesting, the differences between you even more so. If one of you is a Tokyo housewife and the other is a Caribbean pearl diver then that difference will probably have informed your writing and be of great interest to your readership. A poet and a screenwriter. A lawyer and a social worker. French and English. Young and old. Man and woman. To be more than one person is to be interesting. To put it another way, in fiction writing there are thousands of writers out there but only dozens of collaborative writing teams. Collaboration is going to be your Unique Selling Point that separates you from the herd. At conventions, launches and other events the question you are guaranteed to be asked is, ?how do you write a book when there?s two (or three) of you?? It will sell books, if only so people can try to see the joins in the writing where one writer stops and the other takes over. However, in terms of branding, you should also consider whether your writing identity is your true names or a single collaborative pseudonym. The successful British thriller writer, Nicci French, is actually husband and wife team Nicci Gerard and Sean French. Grant Naylor, the writer-creator of SF sitcom, Red Dwarf, is Doug Naylor and Rob Grant. There are numerous reasons for taking this approach and one is perhaps that readers are more comfortable with the notion of one author. A collaboration is not an easy thing and a collaborative work has more scope for being of a poor quality. Multiple authors can make readers suspicious. Did one writer replace the other when the project went wrong? Did one lose interest and the other take over? When was the last time you saw an excellent film with four or more credited scriptwriters? Exactly. But also a writer?s collaborative work is going to be different to their solo work. Authors may want to consider a collaborative pseudonym in order to help readers distinguish between the writer?s different styles.

There are other reasons as well. Virginia Andrews, author of Flowers in the Attic, has pulled off the amazing feat of writing new novels long after her own death. In recent years, there have been further novels written by posthumous collaborator, Andrew Neiderman. The name ?Virginia Andrews? is such a powerful selling tool that it serves the publisher?s needs to keep the name going.

Indeed, one advantage of a shared pseudonym is that it can survive the departure of any one of the collaborators. Perhaps you?ve written a novel together under a shared name. If one collaborator vanishes (death, abduction, getting a proper job, etc), at least the other can continue to write further works without the reading public wondering what has happened to the other guy. In fact, new blood can be injected into the collaboration without a change of name. This can continue ad infinitum. Do you know how many people have written under the name of ?Ellery Queen?? If you do, please tell Ellery Queen magazine because even they don?t know. It?s a lot. Handled well, a collaborative pseudonym can create a popular and enduring writing force with a greater output and breadth of writing talent than any individual. A problem of course arises with the question of who the pseudonym belongs to. As a collaborative pair, can you each use it whenever you like or should it only be used when you are working together? Does it belong to you or the publisher? Can it even be sold on? Could it be possible that, twenty years on, different authors will be writing under the same name, claiming to be the ?true? or ?original? author? It has happened with pop bands on numerous occasions. There?s no reason why it can?t happen with writing. Whatever the case, collaboration is an interesting selling point and one you ought to mention in the promotion of your book. Appearing together as a writing pair (or trio or whatever) will draw interest at conventions and festivals. Being a collaborative team can also be of benefit in other forms of self-promotion. On social media, such as Facebook and Twitter, you have the benefit of having a greater number of friends/followers than individuals. Your social circle is wider. You can reach out to a wider audience. You can retweet/like/whatever each other in a way that seems less boastful and self-serving than promoting yourself does. Furthermore, if you have solo works available, you can use this wider network to introduce new readers to your work (and each other?s work). If one of you comes from a romance writing background and the other from a fantasy writing background then there may be a chance for some cross pollination, introducing romance readers to fantasy novels and vice versa. Whether you use a pseudonym or not, whether your collaboration is an exciting mash-up of genres or styles, whether you take advantage of your separate identities to promote your work through social media, you need to make the best use of your collaboration in selling your novel. Your novel won?t sell itself but, as collaborators, you do have advantages (if only superiority of numbers) over the poor solo writer.

Chris Christie is 'ready' for keynote at convention

Chris Christie is set to deliver the keynote address at the Republican National Convention tonight. But he'll have one eye on Isaac, which could make landfall just before the New Jersey governor takes the podium.

"We're all obviously looking very closely at what's going to be happening in the gulf. And our thoughts and prayers are with the people of Louisiana, Mississippi, Alabama and hope that any damage that may happen will be minimal and there will be no loss of life," he told me on GMA.

Despite the threatening storm Christie said his speech "has pretty much stayed the way it was intended to be."

Party faithful are expecting a fire and brimstone address from the governor, but Christie wouldn't say if that's what they'll get.

"I'll be talking about the New Jersey experience and what that means for the country, what it can mean and promise for the country. They'll be some other stuff I'll be talking about too. But I'll be ready when I walk out on that stage tonight," he said.

"I think that if the American people watch tonight and leave the speech by saying, 'Yup, that's him, that's who I've heard about. He seems genuine to me,' then think I will have done my job for me and if they say I like the vision he's laid out for the country and for his party for the next four years, then I will have done the job for my party and my country," he said.

Christie had a tip for Mitt Romney when he takes the stage Thursday: open up to the American people.

"I've always said this George?Mitt Romney is going to have to win this campaign. And to do that over the next 70 days he's going to have to let the American people see who he is, put out a bold vision for the future. Remember, he's a challenger?Challengers always get a late look," he said.

Over the weekend Mitt Romney repeated the famous Popeye quote "I am who I am" in several interviews, implying that perhaps he wouldn't show more of his personal side this week.

Christie disagrees, and credits Rep. Paul Ryan for already bringing out a new side of the presidential candidate.

"I think you've seen [Romney] show a lot more of himself even since Paul Ryan has joined the ticket. I think Paul has brought energy to the ticket and he's brought great energy to Governor Romney after a long and arduous campaign. So I think that the American people are going to see a lot more of him and they're going to start seeing it tonight with Mrs. Romney," he said. "Who no one can speak better or more articulately about the man that Mitt Romney is and the leader he'd be for our country than Ann Romney so I think the fun starts tonight, George, and I think the American people are going to start to get a complete picture about who Mitt Romney is and why he'd be a great president."
