Celldex Drug Effectively Targets Breast Cancer Tumours | TopNews ...

Celldex Drug Effectively Targets Breast Cancer TumoursA latest study has shown that a drug prepared by Celldex Therapeutics Inc can shrink tumors in patients with advanced breast cancers.

Some types of malignant tumors develop a protein named GPNMB on their surface and the drug has been manufactured to target the same, the company has told.

It has been found by the report that the drug CDX-011 works much better than standard chemotherapy. The drug considers tumor-targeting antibody as a cell-killing chemotherapy drug.

The company had conducted the drug trial, in which almost 122 patients with progressed breast cancer were tested despite being given standard therapy for several times previously.

It was found by the team that 19% of the ones receiving the drug realized a shrink in their tumors. However, the shrink was noted only in 14% of those who had a standard chemotherapy.

The team also discovered that amongst patients, who had GPNMB in minimum 25% tumor cells, 32% of those receiving the drug treatment responded to it. And only 13% of chemotherapy patients showed a response.

"GPNMB helps the tumor cell to move around. It almost seems like this drug puts the brakes on that process by taking away its legs", said Dr. Linda Vahdat, Director of the breast cancer research program at Weill Cornell Medical College.
