Recreational Sport ? Steps to Follow When Choosing Your Leisure ...

How do you know which recreational sport is right for you? Though this is a simple question, it may not have a simple answer. Before answering this question, it makes sense to know the definition of a recreational sport. In simple terms, a recreational sport is any sport activity or event that one engages in during leisure time. In other words, it is a sport activity or event performed primarily for entertainment and fun. Though in some cases there may be monetary rewards associated with passtime sport, it is not usually the main goal. Other reasons associated with participating in a leisure activities includes: fitness, health, socialization, competition and sport support among others.

There are several options of leisure activities available for all age categories ranging from indoor to outdoor. Making the decision on which choice to pursue can be a real challenge and this varies significantly from one person to the other. For former professional athletes, the decision may be easier especially if they continue participating in their particular former professional sports (i.e. recreational level). The big task of choosing the right recreational sport is however on beginners. In order to make the right choice(s) if you are a beginner, it is important to consider the following general guidelines:

1. Choose a sport that you understand and are passionate about: Leisure sport in a way becomes part of your lifestyle and therefore needs to be entertaining and enjoyable. Choosing something that you don?t like or have no knowledge about can be frustrating even if your friends adore it. It only makes sense to pursue something that you know its rules and regulations. However, this does not mean one cannot learn a new sport or game, but it easier to do so if you love the sport.

2. Consider your goals and objectives: As mentioned above, there are different reasons that drive people into recreational sports. Choosing a sport that is in line with your goals, for example losing weight will only enrich the whole recreational experience. Some one looking for a recreational sport to aid in cutting down some extra body weight may benefit from running, jogging, walking, hiking or swimming among other high calorie burning sport activities as opposed to playing cards or video games. On the other hand somebody looking for a recreational sport that favors socialization may benefit from the latter.

3. Facilities, tools and equipment required: Different recreational sports may require different tools, facilities or equipment or in some cases may require none at all. These tools, facilities or equipment may also vary depending on the needs of every person. For example if you want to play golf for recreation, you will definitely have to purchase a golf club, balls and perhaps shoes. You will also need an available and accessible golf course to play. In some cases if you have more than one favorite recreational sport, you may have to choose what is more convenient based on availability of facilities. It makes more sense to go running at a nearby track especially if you get off work late in the evenings than having to drive for several miles to get to a golf course (i.e. if you like both golf and running).

4. Availability of time: Since a recreational sport is a pastime sport, choosing the right one may be dictated by how much free time is at one?s disposal. Some leisure sports are more time consuming than others. Additionally some of these sports must only be played outside. Where as some sports such as running, jogging, walking, playing tennis, playing basketball or swimming offers both indoor and outdoor options, some of them, for example playing golf, hiking, kayaking, surfing among other don?t. The more time one has, the more the options to choose from and the vice versa.

5. Seasonality: Though this may not be a big deal to people living along the equatorial line geographically, it definitely affects people living in areas with winter and summer climatic seasons. Some recreational sports such as those requiring snow may only be available during winter and only in some parts of the world. So if skiing is the only favorite recreational sport that one can participate in, it means there will be nothing to do for most of the year i.e. during the other seasons. When deciding on the right sport for recreation, it is advisable to have more than one option especially in a situation where one is affected by seasonal changes.

6. Number of participants required: Where as most sports require participation of more than one person at one time, some can be pursued individually. If your schedule does not allow group or team participation, choosing a recreational sport that will enable you to participate alone is a good idea. Jogging, walking, swimming, biking and running are great examples.

As mentioned earlier, this is not an exhaustive list of guidelines, but it is only meant to give you an idea of how to pick the best sport that will make your recreational life a success. Remember the bottom line is fun and entertainment.

Consumer Reports' annual ratings of wireless providers, released Thursday, shows that the major cellphone companies still have a lot of work to do to boost customer satisfaction.

In fact, none of the big four national carriers had an overall satisfaction score above 72 percent, across the board lower than their overall scores from just two years ago. Consumer Reports says cellphone companies remain among the lowest-rated service providers it evaluates.

We pay a lot for our cellphones and wireless services and we expect a lot in return: rock-solid voice connections, seamless data downloads and world-class customer service. But apparently we don?t always feel that we?get it.

Verizon topped the list of major carriers in this year?s subscriber survey, followed by Sprint, T-Mobile and AT&T. The rankings are based on responses from 63,000 readers.

?Verizon stands out from the pack if you are a heavy-duty data user,? said Mike Gikas, senior electronics editor at Consumer Reports. ?They?re the Cadillac network. They?re pricey in some respects, but in terms of overall quality of service and availability of service, they are the overall leader.?

This confirms what J.D. Power and Associates found in its 2012 Wireless Network Quality Performance Study released in August: Verizon is consistently better than the average wireless carrier and much better than most of its competitors.

But your satisfaction can depend on where you live. The Consumer Reports survey looked at 23 metropolitan areas. It found the quality of cell service can vary from place to place. For example, Sprint is virtually tied with Verizon in St. Louis, but in last place (significantly below AT&T) in Chicago.

It?s interesting to note that three smaller companies had the highest marks for customer satisfaction in the Consumer Reports survey: Consumer Cellular, U.S. Cellular and Credo Mobile. U.S. Cellular, the biggest of this group (with service in 24 mostly Midwestern states), earned a reader score of 88 percent.

?They also offer an excellent experience for consumers and an affordable one, especially if you?re looking for a family plan,? Gikas said.

One group that was happier than most: AT&T, Sprint and T-Mobile subscribers who have smartphones that connect to 4G networks. They were consistently more satisfied than customers with 3G service. In fact, when it comes to 4G service, AT&T had the fewest problems of any carrier.

?AT&T has been a basement dweller for several years now. A lot of people are unhappy with the service, except 4G customers. They seem to like the service from AT&T,? Gikas told me.

A tough bunch to please
People?s expectation of good service is much higher than it was just a few years ago.

??They expect their smartphone to do whatever it?s supposed to do every time,? said Kirk Parsons, senior director of wireless services at J.D. Power and Associates.

Smartphone users practically live with the device in their hands. They notice the difference between a connection that takes a second and a fraction of a second. And when something goes wrong, they?re likely to hold a grudge against the company.

The ads promise more and we assume our cellphone company to deliver. For example, subscribers with 4G phones expect those high-speed connections everywhere they go. But 4G service isn?t available everywhere.?

?If you travel, there are still a lot of open patches where 4G is not available,? Parsons noted. ?That frustrates people who want the service wherever they go.?

The potential downside of higher speeds
Consumer Reports cautions that faster phones can result in higher bills. It?s fun to use your phone to play online games and watch streaming video, but if you?re not careful you can really burn through the megabytes.

?Your monthly bill will double with a smartphone,? Gikas said.

And just as more people are upgrading to smartphones, Verizon and AT&T, the country?s two biggest wireless companies, no longer offer unlimited data plans to new customers.

As these ?all-you-can-eat? data plans disappear, some heavy users may find that they go through their monthly allowance a lot sooner than expected.

A cheaper way to go
If you?re looking to spend less on cellphone service, consider a prepaid plan with no monthly service contract. The rates are lower, the phones have gotten better ? you now have a greater choice of smartphones ? and Consumer Reports survey shows that customer satisfaction is relatively high.?

You will pay more for the phone because there is no subsidy from the carrier. With the typical 2-year contract, the cost of that phone is rolled into your monthly rate. With prepaid service, you buy the phone upfront, so your monthly rate is lower.

?Over the course of about two years, you?ll end up paying less,? Gikas noted.

Consumer Reports? top-rated prepaid carrier is TracFone. It offers inexpensive plans for people who don?t use their cell phone very often.

The editors say Straight Talk and Virgin Mobile are standouts for budget smartphones. They offer low-cost, unlimited plans for voice, text and data.

It is tragic. I don?t think something like this will happen again. Don?t think that the people in Bangladesh who perished didn?t want or need those jobs, as well. I know we like to victimize everyone in this country, particularly when it comes to for-profit motivation, which is being assaulted. But, you know, it is a tragedy but I think it is a stretch, an amazing stretch, to sort of try to pin this on Walmart but, of course, the unions in this country are desperate.

Let?s take this line by line.

?It is tragic.? Said in an offhanded ?let?s get this out of the way so I?m not accused of being heartless? way.

?I don?t think something like this will happen again.? Actually, it happens a lot. Hundreds of garment workers in Bangladesh have been killed in fires in recent years. In fact, at least 10 people were injured in another garment factory fire Monday. It?s true that a fire killing more than 100 people is rare, if that?s what Payne means by ?something like this,? but if he just means a fatal fire in a Bangladeshi garment factory, then yeah, it?s going to happen again unless there are big, big changes in labor and workplace safety laws there.

?Don?t think that the people in Bangladesh who perished didn?t want or need those jobs, as well.? Well, Charles, people need jobs. But the thing is, ?I need this job? and ?I look forward to choosing between burning to death or jumping out of an eight-story building to escape burning to death? are two very different things. ?I need this job? should not be a license for exploitation. In fact, garment workers have been fighting to improve working conditions even though by law they are not allowed to unionize, unlike many other workers in Bangladesh. Though the minimum wage for garment workers is now just $38 a month, less than two thirds of the country?s per capita income, that $38 represents a big increase that workers protested and fought for this year. Yes, these workers need jobs, but their fight to make those jobs better, and the large protests they?ve staged in the wake of this fire, show that it?s not as simple as ?well, they need jobs, so let them burn.?

?I know we like to victimize everyone in this country, particularly when it comes to for-profit motivation, which is being assaulted.? Victimize? Let?s talk about victims. Like the at least 112 victims of this fire in which there were no fire extinguishers, exits were inadequate or even locked, and one manager reportedly told people to get back to work after a fire alarm sounded. I?m pretty sure they, and not the profit motive, are the victims here.

?But, you know, it is a tragedy but I think it is a stretch, an amazing stretch, to sort of try to pin this on Walmart but, of course, the unions in this country are desperate.? In the wake of this fire, it kind of defies belief how many companies whose clothes were found in the burned factory have said their clothes shouldn?t have been there anymore, that, yes, they?d used that factory in the past but had stopped just in time to deny that their clothes should have been there. Amazing. So no, it?s not just Walmart. It?s also Sears and Dickies and Ikea and who knows what other companies. But as the largest retailer in the world, Walmart does more than any other company to set prices and labor conditions for manufacturers.

Really, Payne might as well have said, ?I realize I?m supposed to say this is tragic, but I?m a little confused about why I?m supposed to think the tragedy is the loss of more than 100 lives and not the potential threat to Walmart?s profits.?

This resolution designates the every-other week transition as a special project of a limited duration. The changeover will require a large logistical effort, and rather than contracting out, the City has decided to use City employees or temporary employees. This decision will reduce turnover during the period of the project and allows those employees to get benefits like regular employees, which they would not get without the special project designation. Employees who are on the layoff list for this round of budget cuts will be the first to be contacted if they are eligible for the positions created for this project. All positions have been budgeted for in the 2013-2014 budget.

The infamous ordinance repealing the B&O tax exemption for large healthcare service providers passed without the sunset provision proposed at last week?s City Council meeting. As Councilmember Fey clarified, however, the lack of a sunset provision does not mean that the Council can not revisit the issue at a future date. In fact, we heard several comments from council members vowing to review Tacoma?s tax structure as a whole, including the way B&O taxes work.

FIRST READING OF ORDINANCES

Ordinance No. 28108 Amending various sections of the Municipal Code to reflect the elimination of the Human Rights and Human Services Department, align the scope of duties and authority for the new Neighborhood and Community Services Department; and repealing obsolete Chapter 5.20 in its entirety. [T.C. Broadnax, City Manager]

This ordinance and the following two reflect changes covered during the budget process in an effort to streamline processes and improve efficiency. The City Manager expects to see about $750,000 in savings come out of these adjustments.

This first ordinance would consolidate what has been the Human Rights and Human Services, merging services of Code Compliance and Community Based Services into the new Neighborhood and Community Services Department. City Manager Broadnax explained that the departments already work closely together, and their alignment in one department adds value and links critical services.

Ordinance No. 28109 Amending various sections of the Municipal Code to reflect organizational changes and align the scope of duties and authority for the Planning and Development Services and Public Works Departments. [T.C. Broadnax, City Manager]

This ordinance would address overlaps in existing departments, streamlining those services into the new Planning and Development Services and Public Works in ways Broadnax expects to provide more beneficial outcomes for customers and greater efficiencies for the City.

Ordinance No. 28110 Amending various sections of the Municipal Code to reflect organizational changes and align the scope of duties and authority for the Community and Economic Development Department, including the assignment of oversight of the Historically Underutilized Business Program and Local Employment and Apprenticeship Training Program. [T.C. Broadnax, City Manager]

This third ordinance would remove Planning and Building and Land Use Services from the Community and Economic Development Department, and add the HUB and LEAP programs to more closely align with the City?s goals of supporting small business efforts.

Ordinance No. 28111 Amending Chapter 8.20 of the Municipal Code, relating to minors and alcohol, by repealing Section 8.20.070 in its entirety and enacting a new Section 8.20.071, entitled ?Minors and Liquor ? Prohibited Acts,? to allow for effective and efficient prosecution consistent with state law. [Keith Echterling, Prosecuting City Attorney; Elizabeth Pauli, City Attorney]

These changes would bring the TMC up to date on this issue, which has not been addressed since 1988. The changes would bring Tacoma in line with the State code, allowing the City office to prosecute this kind of offense in alignment with the State law.

Ordinance No. 28112 Adopting the 2013-2018 Capital Facilities Program. [Steve Call, Interim Director, Finance]

The proposed 2013-2018 CFP was heard by the Planning Commission in October, and has been presented as a part of the budget process. The list of capital facilities projects included in Tacoma?s comprehensive plan is a planning document that complements the budget, and includes the whole range of projects for the City. New projects are identified for the list based on public input, recognized needs within the city, alignment with City goals and objectives, and availability (or potential availability) of funding. Completed projects are removed from the list. This year 18 projects have been recommended to be added, and 67 will be removed from the list. Among the projects listed are work to upgrade Puyallup Avenue with complete streets mobility improvements, upgrades to Dock Street, design work to prepare 56th Street for grant money when that becomes available, sidewalk and wetlands conservation projects, ramp improvements at 72nd and I-5, Tacoma Dome improvements, and others. The list aligns with other City planning documents like the Six-Year Transportation plan. Inclusion on the list doesn?t guarantee the project will get funding, but makes it a possibility. If the ordinance passes at its final reading next week, it will be enacted along with the budget for the next biennium.

Ordinance No. 28113 Amending the 2011-2012 Biennial Budget to appropriate funds for contractual obligations, an interfund loan, transfers, and other budget adjustments; and appropriating miscellaneous donations, contributions, and/or fees. [Steve Call, Interim Director, Finance]

This ordinance would authorize transactions within certain operating budgets, capital and grant funds to comply with generally accepted processes.

Ordinance No. 28114 Adopting the 2013-2014 Biennial Budget for the City of Tacoma; and restructuring the remaining balance of a line of credit note through December 31, 2018. [Steve Call, Interim Director, Finance]

We?ve heard a lot about the budget in recent days, weeks, and months, and it hasn?t changed much other than a few minor revisions. One new change is an additional $200,000 associated with Tacoma?s new Transportation Benefit District going into effect a month sooner than expected. We also see an additional $3.5 million associated with the elimination of the B&O tax break for nonprofit healthcare providers. That isn?t a huge number in the grand scheme of things, but it will allow the City to invest some money back into things like our libraries, improvements to Ruston Way and Old Town Dock, and a reduction of the impacts when the SAFER and COPS grants for Tacoma Fire and Police jobs expire. Most of the programs this money will go to are one-time expenditures. We also see a slight adjustment upward of the City?s reserve balance, but it still falls short of the 12% of the total budget recommended for the City to keep on hand.

Another component of this ordinance is the restructuring of a line of credit for the City. Without restructuring, the Tacoma Dome loan would come due as a lump sum in 2013. The restructuring allows the loan to be spread out over the next six years.

We also heard a couple changes that will be coming to TPU billing practices. TPU will be extending its grace period for payment of utility bills from the current 10 days to 15 days, and will be increasing the amount of assistance for low-income households at a level greater than the increase in rates. Those changes will go into effect early next year.

Ordinance No. 28115 Amending Chapter 1.12 of the Municipal Code, relating to the Compensation Plan, to create six unclassified titles to implement the reorganization of departments; and to implement wage provisions for employees represented by the United Transportation Union, Switch Crew Unit and Yardmasters Unit, which covers approximately 32 full-time positions. [Joy St. Germain, Director, Human Resources]

This ordinance contains three items: it amends the TMC to implement 2013 wage increases for two groups of employees arrived at through represented bargaining, it corrects a clerical error that mis-states a wage step increase by three cents, and it creates the positions associated with the implementation of the departmental organizations proposed in ordinances 28108, 28109 and 28110.

PUBLIC HEARINGS AND APPEALS

This is the date set for a public hearing by the City Council on the proposed Six-Year Comprehensive Transportation Improvement Program for amended year 2012, and 2013-2018. [Jennifer Kammerzell, Associate Engineer; Dick McKinley, Director, Public Works]

The RCW requires that the Six-Year plan be updated annually. The plan lists the planned construction projects for the remainder of the six years, and guides project priorities for the City. Four additional projects were added that were not included in materials advertising the public hearing. Those projects were the Pierce Transit Authority project, McKinley Avenue Streetscape, and two bridge maintenance projects: the Union Avenue viaduct and the Schuster Parkway bridge. Those last two projects are fully funded at this point, and will require no local match. As with the CFP, inclusion in the Six-Year Program does not guarantee funding for any projects, but it does open the door. After the hearing today, staff will ask for guidance for Council, and we?ll see a finalized draft at some point in the near future.

We heard comment from one speaker on the topic of adding transit to the Six-Year plan. In light of the service cuts coming on the heels of the defeat of Pierce Transit Prop 1, the commeter asked that the Council consider providing funds to support the transit services that a significant portion of Tacoma residents rely on.

TRANSPORTATION BENEFIT DISTRICT GOVERNING BOARD

The first meeting of the governing board of Tacoma?s new Transportation Benefit District (a.k.a. Tacoma City Council) was scheduled to coincide with this week?s City Council meeting. The board will meet regularly to direct funds, and meetings will be open to the public. Citizens will have input on the actions of the TBD both through input on the Six-Year Transportation plan, and at these TBD meetings.

One commenter spoke to applaud the Council for the creation of the TBD and to ask for investment in public transportation.

Resolutions

Resolution No. TBD 001 Imposing a vehicle fee of $20 for the Tacoma Transportation Benefit District to commence in six months and identifying projects to be funded.

A citizen advisory group worked for months on assessing Tacoma?s streets and other transportation issues, and possible fixes. The report from the Mobility Stakeholder Funding Task Force found a lot of problems in need of funding ? about $800 million worth ? and made some recommendations for addressing those issues. Among those suggestions was the formation of a Transportation Benefit District for the purpose of raising funds specifically for transportation-related issues, including the levying of a license fee.

The fee proposed here would take effect six months after passage of the resolution, so beginning next May it?s going to cost an extra $20 to renew your car tabs. Campers, mopeds, and some other vehicles will be exempt. The City expects to raise just over $4 million in the next biennium.

Projects will be selected for a piece of that $4 million by the Council TBD Governing Board. Those projects will come from the Six-Year Transportation Improvement Program. Staff will take direction from the board on which projects to pursue, and will make regular progress reports back. Projects would not be required to be funded in full by TBD dollars, which could be used in combination with other funding sources. The State Department of Licensing will collect the fee, and remit the money to the City. Mayor Strickland reminded the audience that this is only $4 million every two years ? not much compared to the cost of possible projects ? and suggested that the money be used to focus on neighborhood streets to spread the money as far as possible.

Comments of the Tacoma Transportation Benefit District Governing Board

Deputy Mayor Lonergan asked about the procedure for scheduling future meetings. Staff responded that a schedule will be forthcoming for Council input, which they will try to make consistent with resolutions that need to be adopted. Lonergan recommended that meetings happen on a regular schedule to maximize public input._

Government Performance and Finance Committee ? Deputy Mayor Lonergan reported on topics discussed by the committee:

At the next meeting the committee will hear updates on State Auditor and Moss Adams audit reports, Tacoma Power bond defeasance, Tacoma Rail Mountain Division , and other topics. Deputy Mayor Lonergan also promised that in the coming year he and other council members would be looking closely at Tacoma?s tax structure, including the administration of the B&O tax, as well as other taxes.

Councilmember Ibsen reminded us of the upcoming discussion of live/work spaces in Tacoma this Wednesday, November 28, 6:00 to 8:00 p.m. at the New Frontier Lounge. Ibsen also suggested the Bethany Presbyterian Church?s 25th Annual fair trade market this Sunday, December 2 for your holiday shopping.

Councilmember Campbell recommended that everyone take advantage of Zoolights in its 25th year ? check out the giant octopus. Campbell also asked us all to make our holiday spending with the local economy in mind; continue to shop local at locally owned businesses.

Deputy Mayor Lonergan thanked to Mike Slevin, Principal Mary Chapman, and others (especially Al the janitor) for their work on Fawcet Elementary School?s pilot program to teach kids the about food waste recycling ? particularly the connection between the little brown bin at your house and the amount of stuff that goes into our landfills.

Councilmember Woodards congratulated everyone at the City who has or will take an early retirement as a part of the City?s budget cutting measures.

Templeton Rye began production at Lawrenceburg Distillers in Indiana, and has since come home. It was launched to the public in 2005, and began distribution outside the state in 2007. It spends four years in charred, new American oak barrels before release. Templeton started out as a single-barrel whiskey, and made the transition to small batch after reports of inconsistent bottles filtered back to Iowa. Bottling 15-20 barrels at a time, selected from different positions in the rick house, has enabled Bush and Kerkhoff to market a standardized product. They have built their own distillery in Templeton; in addition to being the town?s largest employer, they are committed to preserving the oral history of the whiskey and the Prohibition era.

Tasted neat, Templeton Rye has an assertive, spicy nose with indications of barrel sweetness. The sweet/spicy theme continues in the mouth, with the whiskey presenting a complex flavor profile: a ripe, plump texture is amplified by notes of vanilla and honey, and balanced by strong hints of pepper and grain. The finish is long and mellow, and this is an absolute pleasure to sip on its own (Al Capone was tight on target). Mixed into a Manhattan, it?s remarkably smooth and charming?unctuous and spicy at once, flavorful and fascinating.

As with all rye whiskey nowadays, demand for Templeton exceeds supply. Distribution is growing slowly, but the growth of production has been hampered by the four-year aging period?a typical dilemma for a whiskey startup. However, even if it hasn?t reached your state, it?s fairly easy to acquire Templeton through one of the larger Internet suppliers (Binny?s, K & L Wine Merchants, Hi-Time Wine Cellars, etc.). The average retail price is $40, and worth every penny.

RECIPES
Ward 8 (a Pre-Prohibition classic)
2 oz. Templeton Rye
.5 oz. orange juice
.5 oz. lemon juice
3 dashes Grenadine
Combine ingredients with ice in a cocktail shaker. Shake vigorously, and strain into a chilled coue cocktail glass.

The Capone
2 oz. Templeton Rye
.75 oz. Grand Marnier
1 oz. Champagne
1 dash bitters
Mix, chill, and serve straight up with a lemon twist.

Templeton Rye Breeze
1.5 oz. Templeton Rye
1 oz. Aperol
2 oz. fresh grapefruit juice
2 dashes grapefruit bitters
Combine ingredients in a cocktail shaker with ice, shake well and strain into a tall glass filled with ice. Garnish with a grapefruit peel.

Apple to start selling new iMacs on Friday

CUPERTINO, Calif. (AP) ? Apple says the smaller version its new, slimmed-down iMac desktop computers will go on sale Friday. It will also start taking orders for the larger model, but the units won't ship until next month.

The model with the 21.5-inch screen will cost $1,299 and up, depending on the configuration. The model with a 27-inch screen will start at $1,799.

The iMac tacks the computer components to the back of a large LCD screen. The new models have no disk drive, helping make the edges one-fifth the thickness of the old model. They bulge considerably toward the middle of the back, however.

Apple revealed the new models a month ago.

Ask the Diet Doctor: Why Do I Crave Comfort Food? - Shape

Q: Why do I crave comfort food more in the winter?

A: Seasonal changes in food cravings are a good example of the tight link between food and our hormones and emotions. If you notice a marked changed in your levels of desire for homemade baked macaroni and cheese (my No. 1 comfort food) as the weather turns colder and darker, it could be due to seasonal affective disorder (SAD).

This condition is characterized by increased anxiety, oversleeping, lethargy, and problems concentrating. Since comfort foods are generally high in fat and carbs, they can increase serotonin production and thus feelings of wellbeing, making them a natural pick for anyone feeling low.

See your doctor, and if it turns out you do have SAD, try some of these treatments to deal with your wintertime blues instead of heading to the kitchen.

Vitamin D
Improvement in blood levels of the ?sunshine? vitamin is associated with a decrease in depressive symptoms. I recommend that you get your vitamin D levels checked (this is a simple blood test that your physician should have no problem approving for you), and then supplement with vitamin D according to your test results. If you want to skip the blood test, you can start taking 2,000 to 3,000 IU of vitamin D each day, as this dosage is shown to be safe. I would caution against supplementing with higher levels, however, without having a blood test done.

Light Therapy
This involves sitting in front of a light box, which simulates natural light, for a predetermined period of time each day. For the most effective treatment, you should look directly into the light box light. As with most things, start out slow with 10- to 15-minute sessions, and work up to longer sessions depending on the severity of your symptoms.

Get Outside
It doesn?t get much easier than a walk outdoors. One study in Denmark found that going for a stroll outside was as effective as light therapy for the treatment of seasonal affective disorder. And there?s no substituting nature photos on your laptop for time spent taking in real nature: In a review of research looking at the impact of nature versus technologically simulated nature (for example, nature scenes projected on HDTVs), researchers found that technologically simulated nature is as effective at improving mood and wellbeing as staring at a brick wall, but a real window to nature improves wellbeing and reduces stress.

Oklahoma and West Virginia Left Out of Education Grants 'Lottery'

The U.S. Department of Education has $400 million in grant funds available to what will be 20 or so finalists from around the nation to improve education in innovative and ambitious ways. Neither Oklahoma nor West Virginia will be seeing any of those grant dollars.

Race to the Top Grant Program

Race to the Top grants first became available in 2009, through an initiative spearheaded by President Obama to improve academic standards throughout the country. A total of $4.35 billion of federal government funds were allocated for this program. In his speech announcing the new program, Department of Education Secretary Arne Duncan emphasized that states applying for grant funds will need to show plans to meet four core, interconnected educational reforms.

One of the major premises behind the Race to the Top program is that academic standards should be high -- as high as in competing nations -- prepare students for college or a career after completing high school, and the high standards need to be applied through all American school systems. An education in a small community in Oklahoma should provide the same quality education that major school systems in wealthy suburbs provide.

Six Oklahoma School Systems, Eight West Virginia School Systems Sent Applications

For the first three years of the Race to the Top program, it was states who applied for grant money. This year's program differs in that separate school districts rather than entire states sent in applications for the grants.

In Oklahoma, Oklahoma City, Lawton, Purcell and partner Noble, and Western Heights Public Schools were among the applicants, reported NewsOK.com . Oklahoma has never been a finalist in the four years the grant program has been in existence.

West Virginia had eight applications sent in from around the state, reported the Associated Press . In 2009 and 2011, the state did receive grant money from Race to the Top, but did not finish as a finalist in 2010.

Reaction to News by Oklahoma Officials

Tricia Pemberton, spokeswoman for the Oklahoma Education Department, and Gov. Mary Fallin both indicated little surprise that Oklahoma did not even make the first cut of semifinalist applications; both lay the blame on the Obama administration.

Jackie Mania, coordinator of the Race to the Top grant application and innovative programs coordinator for Oklahoma City district schools, explained that the competition for the grant funds was stiff. Mania also explained that through the process of completing the application, the district identified further needs and plans for the school system and indicated that the district would continue to look for ways to gain additional funding to take the system to an improved level.

Bottom Line

There may be more to the story of Oklahoma having never received any grant money from the Race to the Top program than sour political grapes and officials would do well to look into concrete data and facts about the Oklahoma school system as a whole before casting aspersions.

Per the National Education Association's national report , "Rankings & Estimates," Oklahoma ranked 48th out of the 50 states and the District of Columbia in money spent per student. As the NEA noted, states still bear the bulk of the burden in funding for public schools. If education is really a priority in Oklahoma, then it's time for the funding to follow.
