Managing the Emotional Roller Coaster of Moving Your Family to a ...

When it?s time to move into a new house, it can be a really exciting experience. It?s a home filled with all kinds of possibilities. Plus, it?s a new neighborhood which brings about new people and finding ways to thrive in a new community. Of course, newness also brings forth unfamiliarity and that can cause a bit of an emotional roller coaster ride for you and your family as you?re in the process of moving in and getting settled.

So, what are some things that you can do to keep everyone as ?calm, cool and collected? as possible as you?re moving in furniture and unpacking boxes? Here are a few handy tips to keep close by:

Allow your children the chance to vent. If your children are old enough to where they were used to their former house and made friends in their former neighborhood, initially, they are probably not going to be very thrilled about leaving all of that behind. It?s OK for them to vent out their feelings, so long as it?s respectfully done. Adjustment is hard. Talking about it makes things easier.

Involve everyone in the ?new d?cor? process. Packing probably wasn?t fun and moving what was packed into a new place usually isn?t either. However, when people can play an active role in the decorating process that can make it more entertaining for everyone. Take family votes on things like bonus room wall colors or where to put the flat-screen. Soon, people will be so caught up in decorating that they won?t even realize that they were unpacking in the process.

Video tape it. There can be some really funny things that happen in the midst of trying to cook with no dishes or sleep on sleeping bags while assembling beds. Why not document all of that? Once you have everything put together, you can sit back with some popcorn and laugh at the times of peak frustration.

Do some sightseeing. Whether you?ve moved into some prime?Tanglewood real estate?or a place closer to your own hometown, a part of the excitement that comes with living in a new place is that you can discover some things that you didn?t know before. So, take breaks between unpacking to walk through the neighborhood, to look for a new park to play in or a cool place to eat or shop. The more options that you discover that you have, the more reason you and your family will have to enjoy loving in your new place.

Pace yourself. Rome wasn?t built in a day and no one has completely moved into a new house in 24 hours either. The moral to this story is this: Don?t stress yourself out. No one is offering you a million dollars to have a picture perfect home in under a week, so why run around all frantic and upset? When you are calm, peaceful and focused, that energy will resonate with other people within your home. That will bring people to a resolve of ?We?ll get it done when it gets done? and before you know it, the emotional roller ride will find itself coming to a stop.
