This Tech Earnings Update is brought to you by Verizon.
Amazon reported revenue and earnings that were below Wall Street's printed expectations, but the stock responded by soaring to an all-time high.
(The company's profit margin was modestly higher than expected. And the stock is likely benefitting from some short-covering, as Amazon bears panic and cover their bets).
Amazon stock hit an all-time high of about $285 in after-market trading. That gives the global ecommerce leader a market cap of about $125 billion.
Here are the numbers:

Other important numbers:
"We?re now seeing the transition we?ve been expecting,? Jeff Bezos, said in the release. ?After 5 years, eBooks is a multi-billion dollar category for us and growing fast ? up approximately 70% last year. In contrast, our physical book sales experienced the lowest December growth rate in our 17 years as a book seller, up just 5%. We're excited and very grateful to our customers for their response to Kindle and our ever expanding ecosystem and selection.?
Here are the notes from the earnings call:

5:01 - The call is beginning?
VP of Investor Relations, Sean Boyle, and CFO Tom Szkutak on the line
5:03 - Tom begins
Talking about all the financials...
Investing in technology and infrastructure including Amazon web services. World wide revenue grew more than 20%. Media revenue increased 10% excluding foreign exchange.?
Now talking about operating expenses.?
5:08 -?Turning to balance sheet...Numbers are all here in the release.
5:10 - Guidance
Guidance - based on order trends we see today. Not possible to accurately predict demand. Giving a big disclaimer.
Net sales between $15-16.6 billion for Q1.
Gap operating income $258 million loss and $65 million positive income.?
5:11 - Moving on to questions
First question from Morgan Stanley - Are there other parts of the business where you can transition to more of fixed cost?
Tom - You're right in terms of over past few years we have expanded our fulfillment network. You're seeing that reflected in our transportation costs and fulfillment expense is really not fixed. Seeing that all reflected in margins. In terms of other opportunities, there are a number of opportunities as we invest in individual customer experience areas across the business. Many of those will be on our website. As they grow they become more effective on per unit or customer basis. There are a number of opportunities that we will have moving forward to do that.
Next question from JP Morgan. Asking about shift to 3rd party in video game space in particular. Are there specific categories you would point to where you've made this shift?
Tom - We did see a good expansion as you mention in 3rd party units. Increased from 36% last year. Overall unit growth rate was 32%. 3rd party was in excess of 40%.
Question from Jeffries - Would you provide any insights around shipping?
Tom - Not a lot I can comment on in regards to plans. We opened up 20 new fulfillment centers and we saw very rapid growth in fulfillment capacity and we'll stay tuned and let you know more as year progresses.
RBC Capital Markets question - Last couple of calls you've called out specific investments. You didn't do it this quarter. Does that mean we're at end of major investment cycle?
Tom - In terms of unit growth, there's not a lot more I can add to it. We did see substantially high unit growth in Q4; we're seeing very strong 3rd party growth. I wouldn't read into anything related to investment cycle. In terms of levels of how much we'll add, stay tuned.
5:19 - Goldman Sachs question - Sales tax issue; impact of being closer with faster delivery in new states. Net net, what do you see as being the impact of rolling out fulfillment center footprint, taking both those things into account?
Tom - I'm not really sure how best to answer your question. We certainly have expanded rapidly since 2009. 2010-2012 we've rapidly increased footprint globally. Can carry a much broader selection. We continue to be in the locations we'd like to be in and we'll continue to expand our footprint over time and become even closer and closer to customers.
5:21 - Gene Munster question - Growth in 3rd party, is that higher margin?
Tom - That's what we attempt to do from a pricing standpoint is to try and be agnostic. This is on a 3rd party versus retail. We've also added a lot of other services in terms of fulfillment. Certainly as you look at last few years we've been very heavily expanding because growth we've been experiencing puts pressure on cost structure. Again, we're certainly attempting at least on a product basis to be roughly agnostic.
5:23 - Nomura question - Kindle and Kindle HDs. Attach rate trends.
One thing certainly to look at, number that was in the release today, multi-billion-dollar e-book business growing. Launched it just five years ago. Seeing very good progress in other digital media categories. Seeing Prime customers who are watching free content through our video platform has gone over year over year, increased membership year over year, they're also purchasing paid content. Watch free but also paying for new content which is great. We've launched a number of new services on the music side. I can't give you specific for attach rates but business is making good progress and it's still very early.
Deutsche bank question - Reclassified some revenue in early 2012.?
In terms of overall selection, as we were talking about earlier in terms of having more expanded footprint, there's no question that's helping us add selection more economically to Prime. That's both in terms of third party selection and retail selection. We did add shipping portion fees in Q1 2012 and we see some benefit year over year. Still seeing leverage
Merill Lynch question - Able to call out Taiwan and video game categories. ANy reason revenues were in lower half of this quarter.
Tom - If you look at our growth rate, we were up 23% on a revenue basis, higher in per unit basis. In terms of some of things we saw, we saw solid growth across many different categories and geographies year over year. Some things to call out that may have been a little softer: we did see some of higher average selling price items be softer. Consumer electronics subcategories like TVs and MP3 players, digital cameras to some extent were softer. But again, with base that we have in Q4, still very solid growth. Another one, we were thrilled to have Paper White in our lineup, certainly the best e-reader that's out there, but we couldn't keep up with demand. We would have had more sales in Q4 if we were able to keep up with demand. Team is working very hard to make sure we have good in stock moving forward on that product.
Amazon instant video question - Ability to add exclusive content, and what relationship is between adding more titles on hardware, like Kindle devices?
Tom - We'll continue to expand our selections in terms of Prime instant video and in a number of different ways. We have a very interesting selection right now as it relates to Prime overtime. Beyond that, you'll have to stay tuned.
5:30 - Evercore partners question - Question on other segment line.
In terms of EWS business, We've increased number of services dramatically over last couple of years. We'll continue to innovate on behalf of customers in that space. Others go into that line item: credit card and marketing revenue goes in there. But again, EWS is in that line item.
5:32 - Barclay's question: Pace of business throughout fourth quarter. Deceleration in month of December?
Tom: Not a lot of specifics. We don't talk about trends within the quarter. But in terms of year over year growth, obviously the Q4 is very seasonal. December is by far largest month. In terms of digital growth rates, not a lot of comments there. In terms of international, a lot of geographies we are investing in heavily. China would be one. Some of the European countries we're investing in. You're seeing those represented in those segment results.?
5:33- Citi question - Domestic versus international margins?
Not a particular call out that I can make on that. In terms of the difference between the two, keep in mind a couple factors: Mix of business is a little bit different. Also have newer geographies that we're investing in have a longer term horizon for returns. So those are factors that you look at the two segments differently.
5:35 - Video game sales impacted YOY growth?
We haven't broken out first party versus third party. That's not something we've done. Not something I can help you with there?
5:37 - Accounting clarification. Second question: LivingSocial Amazon investment.
There's not a lot I can specifically talk about as it relates to LivingSocial. So I'd encourage you to look at our full disclosures related to that. Local - there still is a very interesting opportunity there. We do have an investment in LivingSocial and a local business ourselves. So it's an interesting opportunity and a long term opportunity to make that even better. Think about it over the long-term horizon and it's very early there.
5:37 - Call ends.

The photo above could well be our first look at the LG Nexus 4 in white. The shot was sent in to PhoneArena by an anonymous tipster, and seems to show the current Nexus phone with a white exterior and silver-trimmed LED flash. As with any image of unknown origin, there's no way to guarantee its veracity, but we have to say it looks real enough to us.
The full 13MP original can be inspected over at the source link, and we've got an expanded view of the lens and flash after the break. If nothing else, the difficulty involved in fabricating an image of this size is a point in its favor.
We've also heard whispers ourselves of a white Nexus 4 being in the works in the weeks since the original black model launched. And remember that LG already offers a white version of the Optimus G, the phone upon which the N4 is based. The previous two Nexus phones have been available in white too, albeit in limited quantities.
Anyone in the market for a white Nexus 4? Shout out in the comments!

One decade ago, the US Supreme Court ruled the Scouts had the legal right to exclude gays, but the organization's new policy would allow local troops would be able to decide the issue for themselves. NBC's Pete Williams reports.
By Miranda Leitsinger, Staff Writer, NBC News
Jennifer Tyrrell cried when she got the news Monday that the Boy Scouts of America may be changing its policy to admit gays and lesbians as Scouts and leaders.
The mother of four children was kicked out of the organization last year, as den leader of her son?s Tiger Cub pack in Ohio, because she is a lesbian. The longstanding policy has sometimes seen the quiet, or in Tyrrell?s case, public, exit of gays ? an exodus that has rocked the Boy Scouts and led to growing calls for the group to open its doors to all who want to join.
?I?m looking forward to the day when we can once again take part,? Tyrrell told NBC News by phone, reminiscing about all of the fun activities she so enjoyed with her son Cruz and the youth in her pack, such as the Pinewood Derby and campfires. ?This is a gigantic leap, especially on this ? decades-old policy that they have gone to the Supreme Court to defend. ? Of course it?s not the ultimate, but it?s definitely a great hurdle.?
It?s not the ultimate, according to Tyrrell and others, because the proposal would eliminate the ban at the national level, but would allow local sponsoring organizations to decide whether or not they would accept gays, NBC News? Pete Williams reported.
Courtesy Jennifer Tyrrell
Jennifer Tyrrell and her son Cruz. Tyrrell was ousted from her post as den leader of her son's Tiger Cub pack in April 2012 because she is gay.
?So essentially, instead of forcing people to discriminate they?re going to allow people to discriminate,? said Zach Wahls, who is the son of a lesbian couple and who has been leading a campaign fighting to include lesbians and gays in the Scouts. ?Even though one is less bad than the other, we still need to make sure that local units are understanding how a ban on gay members negatively affects their unit.?
Still, Wahls said, it was a step in the right direction though the Boy Scouts do have a ways to go.
?Compared to where we were seven months ago, with the BSA, you know, calling this the best policy for the organization right now and then seven months later understanding well actually ? that?s not quite true, it?s a big development,? he added.
Wahls was referring to the Boy Scouts announcement last July that it was sticking with the policy after revealing it had undertaken a confidential two-year review of the disputed membership guidelines. It also came a few months after Tyrrell was forced out and a day before she handed in a petition to national leaders with hundreds of thousands of signatures calling for her reinstatement.
That prompted a number of Eagle Scouts to turn in their hard-earned regalia, with more than 200 posting their letters and photos of their medals, pins or certificates to a tumblr page?started by Burke Stansbury, a 36-year-old communications specialist in Seattle, Wash., who decided to leave the Scouts for good over the issue.
Stansbury welcomed the news of the proposed change but said he wasn?t sure if he would ever go back.
One decade ago, the US Supreme Court ruled the Boy Scouts of America had the legal right to exclude gays, but the organization's new policy would allow local troops would be able to decide the issue for themselves. NBC's Pete Williams reports.
?I sort of said all along that I was really making a decision to do this, that they?ve held on too long and that, you know, I?ve lost faith in the organization regardless of what changes they might make in the future,? he said.
Stansbury said he would wait and see if the Boy Scouts ended up reversing the policy and if they ?actively worked to be an open and inclusive organization.?
The discussion of the potential change in policy is nearing its final stages, according to outside scouting supporters. If approved, the change could be announced as early as next week, after the BSA's national board holds a regularly scheduled meeting.
?Before I made any decision about rejoining or asking for my medal back, I?d really want to see that it was being implemented but yeah ? I am certainly open to seeing what happens and I mean, there is you know, much to love about the Boy Scouts as an organization,? he said. ?So if they were to change, it would take some time, I think, to rebuild the trust of people like me who lost faith. But I think it?s still possible.?
One of those most impacted recently by the Boy Scouts? policy was Ryan Andresen, 18, and his family. Andresen said he was denied submitting his application for the Eagle rank to the national organization by his Scoutmaster after finishing his final service project last fall because he is gay, and after coming out as gay to his troop last summer.
After much back and forth with the local council in Moraga, Calif., and hard feelings on both sides in a story that made national headlines for weeks, his application for the pinnacle Boy Scouts? achievement was forwarded to the national headquarters for approval, said his father Eric Andresen, 52.
John Makely / NBC News
Ryan Andresen holds an Eagle Scout pin that was given to him by a fellow Scout who is gay on Friday, Oct. 12, 2012, in New York, N.Y.
Ryan, a high school senior, was still hoping for the award, even though he already knows he has earned it, Eric Andresen said.
?Four months ago, if the ban hadn?t been in place, we wouldn?t even been going down this road. ? He?s been hurt a lot. There?s been a lot of damage done to Ryan emotionally,? he said Monday. ?If the board does elect to get rid of the policy, I don?t know why they wouldn?t then retroactively award Ryan his Eagle. They certainly should.?
Eric Andresen, who resigned as the committee chair of his son?s troop after the problems began, said he was done with the organization after 10 years as an adult leader, but he hadn?t yet broached the possibility with his son of being able to participate as a volunteer or leader one day if the policy is changed.
?I don?t think that?s a conversation that ? I?d even want to start it with him right now,? he said, noting that after Ryan spent a dozen years with the Boy Scouts, the group ?turned its back on him? and was ?responsible for all of the grief he?s gone through the last four months.?
One of the Andresen?s main objectives was to help others, such as boys who may still be hiding in the closet.
?If BSA does do the right thing ? we?re looking at, you know, what this is going to do for thousands of other Scouts so that nobody else has to go through what Ryan went through,? he said. ?It?s time to end this stuff. Gay kids have a right to be Scouts, too.?

A doctor was fatally shot and the suspected gunman was in custody on Monday after a shooting at a doctor's office in Newport Beach, police said.
The shooting happened at 2:45 p.m. in a second-floor patient room at 520 Superior Ave., said Kathy?Lowe, of the the Newport Beach Police Department.
Lowe said police received a call from someone reporting hearing up to seven shots fired in the medical office. Police arrived and found both the gunman and the shooting victim in the office.

The gunman, a?man in his 70s?whose name was not immediately released, was arrested without a struggle. An employee who works in the building said the gunman had a scheduled appointment with the slain doctor.
Police did not identify the person who was shot, but witnesses told NBC4 that the man was possibly a urologist.
Because the building is so new, witnesses initially thought the shooting was the sound of construction.
"I thought it was construction, like a nail gun," said Kristin Crotty, an employee at the medical facility.
The doctor has a wife and two children. His family declined to comment late Monday.

A professor is taking heat for comparing Alabama's immigration crackdown to Nazi Germany in a series of artistic images including swastikas and depictions of the Virgin Mary.
Edward Noriega, a professor of Art and Design at Troy University in Alabama, had his artwork pulled from an exhibit earlier this month from Talladega's Heritage Hall Museum because the directors objected to the content.
One piece featured stacked Ajax cans relabeled as an "ethnic cleanser" called "Ala, with HB 56," a reference to the immigration crackdown passed by the Alabama legislature in 2011. Another piece shows an image of the Virgin Mary holding a dustpan and a broom in an empty office, over the title "Se?ora de la Limpieza," or "Our Cleaning Lady." An ashtray reads "Feed Me Get Out."
But the kicker appears to have been a red square overlaid with a white swastika and the the abbreviation HB 56. The tips of the swastikas read "Presbyterian indifference, Baptist indifference, Catholic indifference, Methodist indifference."
Heritage Commission President George Hartsfield told local paper The Daily Home that the swastikas were the main cause behind the controversy.
"I'm just not going to display a swastika," Hartsfield said. "That would be like putting up an image of a Klansman, and I'm not going to do it."
But Noriega defended his work explaining it's a criticism against what he says is a hostile environment for Latinos in the southern state.
"I wanted to be able to compare what Alabama is doing with what the Nazis did," Noriega told a CBS News affiliate. "I do believe this law is a form of ethnic cleansing."
It's not clear how many people fled the state after the passing of one of the country's harshest immigration laws, but labor shortages were reported. Some 81 percent of undocumented immigrants are Latin American, according to the Pew Hispanic Center.

As businesses expand into global territory, competition is getting tougher. The economy may have slowed down in the last few years, but competition has increased. Companies are constantly looking for new ways to develop themselves and gain and edge over their competitors, or just to survive the slump in the economy. Globalization has become a necessity for continued growth, survival, and better performance, and web and VoIP audio conferencing services can help in this.
Web Conferencing services help in bridging the communication gap between different business networks and make decision making a lot faster. Businesses can therefore become much faster, more dynamic, and more efficient. RHUB Online Web Meeting appliances and other similar VoIP tools have therefore become an important part of several companies. While there is no question about the importance of Online Web Meeting tools, the main doubt lingering the minds of entrepreneurs and business managers today is whether they can fully replace phone conferencing.
This question is quite important in the current business environment, especially for organizations that have already set up and gotten used to a rigid VoIP product. At the first instance, it may seem like Online Web Meeting solutions have developed to the point that they are more convenient for business communications than phone lines. After all, replacing phone conferencing can also save a lot of money spent on phone bills and the conferences do not allow a face to face interaction between participants. Online Web Meeting offers at least a virtual visual interaction via computer screens. However, landline based audio conferencing programs have its own advantages that are given below:
?It is possible to begin a phone conversation at any time as long as there is a phone present, but a computer with a running and quick internet connection is needed for holding viable web conferences. Participants can easily be accessed and brought into Online Web Meeting so long as they have a phone with them, but it may not possible to get every participant in front of their desk when arranging a web conference.
?All web conference participants may not have access to USB headsets or microphones in proper condition. Laptops usually contain speakers and a microphone as standard, but their quality may not be good enough. Moreover, so people may not have a laptop and the computer at their disposal may lack the necessary resources to procure them.
?A landline-based phone service of high quality offers a very reliable method of communication between businesses. The advantage is especially apparent when either or some of the participants in a meeting do not have reliable internet connectivity.
?Conferences being held with a large number of participants or for a long period of time can often include phone conferencing operators that offer their services for managing questions between participants and the answer sessions. These operators add a professional touch to otherwise lacking phone conversations and conferences.
?Not all computers can run the application sharing program set up by a business. Many programs run only one type of system or specific systems. In that case, it is important to choose the kind of conferencing program that will go with the systems used by the company. Alternatively, you could opt for conferencing programs that run on different platforms, both new and old.

Jan. 28, 2013 ? Research by U.S. Forest Service scientists forecasts profound changes over the next 50 years in the summer range of the endangered Indiana bat. In an article published in the journal Ecology and Evolution, Forest Service Southern Research Station researchers Susan Loeb and Eric Winters discuss the findings of one of the first studies designed to forecast the responses of a temperate zone bat species to climate change.
The researchers modeled the current maternity distribution of Indiana bats and then modeled future distributions based on four different climate change scenarios. "We found that due to projected changes in temperature, the most suitable summer range for Indiana bats would decline and become concentrated in the northeastern United States and the Appalachian Mountains," says SRS research ecologist Loeb. "The western part of the range (Missouri, Iowa, Illinois, Kentucky, Indiana, and Ohio) -- currently considered the heart of Indiana bat maternity range -- would become unsuitable under most climates that we modeled. This has important implications for managers in the Northeast and the Appalachian Mountains as these areas will most likely serve as climatic refuges for these animals when other parts of the range become too warm."
In general, bat species in temperate zones such as Indiana bats may be more sensitive than many other groups of mammals to climate change because their reproductive cycles, hibernation patterns, and migration are closely tied to temperature. Indiana bat populations were in decline for decades due to multiple factors, including the destruction of winter hibernation sites and loss of summer maternity habitat.
Due to conservation efforts, researchers saw an increase in Indiana bat populations in 2000 to 2005, but with the onset of white-nose syndrome populations are declining again, with the number of Indiana bats reported hibernating in the northeastern United States down by 72 percent in 2011. The study predicts even more declines due to temperature rises from climate change, with much of the western portion of the current range forecast to be unsuitable for maternity habitat by 2060.
"Our model suggests that once average summer (May through August) maximum temperatures reach 27.4?C (81.3?F), the climatic suitability of the area for Indiana bat maternity colonies declines," says Loeb. "Once they reach 29.9?C (85.8?F), the area is forecast to become completely unsuitable. Initially, Indiana bat maternity colonies may respond to warming temperatures by choosing roosts that have more shade than the roosts that they currently use. Eventually, it is likely that they will have to find more suitable climates."
The models the researchers produced provide resource managers guidance on areas that are likely to contain maternity colonies now and in the future, depending on the availability of suitable habitat in those areas. "Managers in the western parts of the range should be aware of the potential changes in summer distributions due to climate change and not assume that declines are due to habitat loss or degradation," says Loeb. "Management actions that foster high reproductive success and survival will be critical for the conservation and recovery of the species."

In this file photo running back Danny Woodhead of the New England Patriots fights off a tackle in the Super Bowl on Feb. 5, 2012. The game was the most watched television broadcast in U.S. history.
By John Roach, NBC News
As millions of Americans huddle around TVs with friends and family this Sunday to watch the Super Bowl, they?ll neglect their laundry, skip vacuuming the carpet and abandon just about anything else that requires electricity, according to a new study. As a result, energy usage will plummet.
During the 2012 Super Bowl, which ranked as the most watched television broadcast in U.S. history with 111.3 million viewers, energy usage dropped 5 percent in the Western U.S. and 3.8 percent in the East, energy software company Opower reported.?
Given all the TVs aglow at once ? which collectively consumed 11 million kilowatt hours of electricity during the game, equivalent to the amount of power generated by 10 medium-sized coal-fired power plants ? the finding seems counter intuitive, according to Barry Fischer, who conducted the analysis.
The drop in energy consumption is the result of "two related phenomena," he told NBC News.
"One is the fact that we are exclusively focusing our attention in one room, on one appliance, at the expense of doing other energy using activities. Number two is we are doing that exclusive activity together."
Energy usage does increase more than a typical midwinter Sunday in the hours prior to the game ? perhaps because people are busy in the kitchen cooking food to munch in front of the tube, and cleaning the house to get it ready for an onslaught of guests.
"But that slight blip upwards is more than offset by the dramatic decrease during the game," Fischer said.?
What?s more, that decrease holds when the game is over, probably because people stay glued to their couches, eyes glazed over and staring at the screen. In the West, where the game ends around dinnertime, people probably socialize for a few more hours instead of going home to do chores.
The study focused just on Sunday, so it?s possible people put off their chores to Monday, but for the big game, the act of getting together with family and friends to watch TV has the benefit of reducing overall energy use.
"While that might not solve the energy crisis, I think it?s an important concept to keep in mind," said Fischer, who plans to head to a Washington D.C. area bar to watch this year?s Super Bowl with friends.
A native of the San Francisco Bay Area, Fischer said he'll be rooting for the 49ers to beat the Baltimore Ravens, though he noted "that did not bias this analysis at all." To learn more about the study, read his blog post.?

The ?January Stock Market Indicator? is based on a loose theory that says if the stock market does well in January, it does well for the remainder of the year. While the first half of January was lackluster for the key stock indices, things really picked up in the second half of the month. But this time, the remainder of the year will be different for the key stock indices. Optimism is far too high, a negative factor for key stock indices.
According to a survey done by Bloomberg, international investors are the most bullish about stocks in at least three and a half years. A total of 53% of the respondents to the global poll believe that key stock indices around the world will provide the most return?this number is 17% higher than when the survey was done in November of 2012 and the biggest jump since the survey began in July of 2009. (Source: Bloomberg, January 2013.)
As optimism has continued to build up, the stock market rally persisted. I have been reading analysts and stock advisors who predict stocks will break above their record highs.
I can?t predict the exact top, or the exact point where the stock market rally will come to a stop, but, as I have been writing, I believe we are very close to the top.
Let?s look at the chart of S&P 500 below.
Chart courtesy of www.StockCharts.com
On the chart, you will notice that since the stock market rally began in 2009, the moves to the upside were fairly quick, until 2011, when the S&P 500 had a ?bad? year. Since then, the S&P 500 index has struggled on each subsequent high.
Each new advance for the S&P 500 has taken longer, which gives me cause to believe the rally is running out of steam. As an example, when the S&P 500 bottom was put in during March of 2009, the S&P 500 had a huge rally to 950 by June?a quick three-month bounce.
Fast forwarding to 2011 and, after the S&P 500 made its low for the year in October, it took until March of 2012 for the index to break above its 2011 highs?five months to get this rally going.
The trading patterns on the S&P 500 are also getting narrower and narrower. Look at the two lines drawn on the chart above; they are suggesting a formation of rising wedge pattern, which is considered a bearish chart pattern. And look at the volume at the bottom of the chart; it?s been continuously declining since 2009?another bearish factor.
It certainly does look like the S&P 500?s climb to the upside is slowing down. Finally, earnings of companies in key stock indices declined for the first time after 11 quarters in third quarter of 2012.
There you have it; four reasons why the S&P 500 stock market index is topping out.
What He Said:
?I?m getting very worried about the state of the U.S. housing market and its ramifications on the economy. The U.S. could be headed for its first outright annual decline in home prices on record, adjusted for inflation. And I really believe this could be a catastrophe for the U.S. economy.? Michael Lombardi in Profit Confidential, August 2, 2006. Michael started talking about and predicting the financial catastrophe we began experiencing in 2008 long before anyone else.

Organizers said they are expecting thousands of participants for the rally on the National Mall, including about 100 from Newtown and buses from New Jersey, New York and Philadelphia. Others are flying in from Seattle, San Francisco and even Alaska. They will gather Saturday at the Capitol Reflecting Pool at 10 a.m. and will begin marching down Constitution Avenue toward the Washington Monument at 11 a.m. A rally is planned on the monument grounds at noon.
Molly Smith, the artistic director of Washington's Arena Stage, and her partner organized the march, inspired by the December massacre that killed 20 first graders and six teachers at Sandy Hook Elementary School in Newtown, she said. The gunman also fatally shot his mother and committed suicide.
"With the drum roll, the consistency of the mass murders and the shock of it, it is always something that is moving and devastating to me. And then, it's as if I move on," Smith said. "And In this moment, I can't move on. I can't move on.
"I think it's because it was children, babies," she said. "I was horrified by it."
While she's never organized a political march before, Smith said she was compelled to press for a change in the law. The march organizers support President Barack Obama's call for a ban on military-style assault weapons and high-capacity ammunition magazines as well as for universal background checks for gun sales. They also want lawmakers to require gun safety training for all buyers of firearms.
As a theater person, Smith said murdering a child is something you can never show in theater. Even in the Greek tragedy, "Medea," the main character kills her children, but that happens off stage, Smith said.
After the Connecticut shootings, Smith posted something on Facebook and drew more support to do something. The group One Million Moms for Gun Control, the Washington National Cathedral and two other churches eventually signed on to co-sponsor the march. Organizers have raised more than $46,000 online to pay for equipment and fees to stage the rally.
Lawmakers from the District of Columbia and Maryland are scheduled to speak. Actress Kathleen Turner is expected to appear, along with Marian Wright Edelman of the Children's Defense Fund and Colin Goddard, a survivor from the Virginia Tech massacre.
Smith said she supports a comprehensive look at mental health and violence in video games and films. But she said the mass killings at Virginia Tech and Aurora, Colo., and Newtown, Conn., all start with guns.
"The issue is guns. The Second Amendment gives us the right to own guns, but it's not the right to own any gun," she said. "These are assault weapons, made for killing people."

For living, the American didactic regularity has been scrutinized, berated, belittled, and criticized when it comes to the learning of Americas offspring. For several families, secretive schools, as classy, are a tuition-guaranteed, well-rounded learning. Charter schools, which are privately operated civic schools formal by the stately departments of civic directive, are an unorthodox as positively. A upward typeface of learning, residence education, is appropriate constantly increasingly prevalent. In studies conducted by the Us. District of Learning, in 2003 present were approximately 1.1 million students who were residence- schooled. According to a prepare in black and white by the Us. District of Learning, the delineation of residence schooled encompassed students whose parents reported them as being schooled at residence as a replacement for of at a civic or secretive train for at smallest amount quantity of their learning and if their part-time staffing in civic or secretive schools did not exceed 25 hours a week. Students who were schooled at residence simply as of a acting illness were not built-in as residence schoolers.

In North Carolina, for case in point, parents who residence train want to have a least possible of a soaring train certificate or the correspondent the leave of directive has to be inspected by the native flames assemble to manage inevitable it meets the didactic cryptogram rations and the close relative obligation go on particular proceedings. These are just a the minority of the stately rations. Nevada, on the new hand over, requires that a residence education close relative have a ideas pass or official recognition. BEVERLY HILLS, Calif. (AP) ? J.J. Abrams calls getting assigned to direct the seventh live-action "Star Wars" film "as surreal as it is exciting."
The director-producer-writer spoke with a handful of media outlets on the red carpet before darting into the Producers Guild Awards on Saturday night. Abrams was there to accept the Norman Lear Achievement Award for such television works as "Felicity" (1998-2002), "Alias" (2001-2006), "Lost" (2004-2010), "Fringe" (2008-2013) as well as the current series "Person of Interest" and "Revolution."
Abrams also is proving to be a go-to director of successful new films for long-established franchises, such as "Star Trek" and "Mission: Impossible."
Last week, Lucasfilm officially announced Abrams' hiring for "Star Wars: Episode VII," which has a tentative release date of 2015. "Star Wars" creator George Lucas personally endorsed Abrams in a statement: "I've consistently been impressed with J.J. as a filmmaker and storyteller. He's an ideal choice to direct the new Star Wars film and the legacy couldn't be in better hands."
As for Abrams' plans for "Episode VII"?
"You know, obviously, it's so early," he replied. "I can just say what I want to do: I want to do the fans proud. I want to make sure the story is something that touches people. And we're just getting started. I'm very excited."

In many homes there are doors that open into a small closet-spaced niche designed to only hold the opened door and provide access to the room. Other than hanging a poster, there isn't much you can do with that space, but if you have kids or just want to display magazines you can add narrow bookshelves to keep reading material handy.
Interior design weblog Design Sponge highlight an apartment by contributors Joshua and Jodie Steen that includes the custom-built narrow bookshelves designed by Joshua. Unfortunately no plans were included but seems to be an easy-to-replicate design using 1x2 lumber?just make sure you measure everything twice to ensure you'll have enough door clearance once you fit the shelves. If you look at the above photo you'll see how the door's knob fits into an opening in the shelves.

A 3 nations coffee ... Bosnia, Italy and USA.
Why do you choose this type of coffee, among all the coffee?s in the world? What does this place inspire in you and what stayed in your heart about this country?Oh, for me that is an easy question! I love Bosnian Coffee and would be drinking it in the Bascarcija, in Sarajevo, right now if I could. So much about that city is fascinating on every level, especially its multi-cultural history, though much of that feeling is gone today. For one thing, drinking coffee is so ingrained in the culture of Bosnia, that there are even names for the appropriate times to drink coffee during the day. Obviously you can drink coffee anytime but mostly it is when meeting others. As a greeting, as a getting to know someone, as a confirmation that you appreciate the relationship you have with the person you are drinking with. It is a ritual and this ritual insists on leisure, respect, peace - at least for the time you are drinking coffee together. It is what I call ?Slow Coffee?. Long before I visited Bosnia for the first time I learned about this culture from my family since I lived with my grandparents as a little girl. They came from Bosnia to Germany. Friends and family would come to visit on weekends and the first thing they are served is coffee with sweets and some pleasant conversation. Always. This phase would be the prelude to the rest of the visit. Out of the kitchen would come many other dishes: meats, cheeses, small shots of Slivovitz (Plum Brandy) and of course even more coffee! Often my grandfather or one of the uncles would strum a guitar, sing a few folk songs. If it was a real party, the women would sing too and dance the circle dance of Bosnia.
Bosnian coffee is like Turkish coffee of course. The Ottomans introduced coffee drinking to Bosnia and its other vassal countries in the 1600?s. It is an eccentricity of nationalism that today those countries never call it ?Turkish coffee? but instead ?Bosnian Coffee?, ?Serbian Coffee?, ?Bulgarian Coffee?. I assume it is a matter of national pride. Bosnia has its own particular coffee culture which I find fascinating.
You have lived in many places and you have roots in different countries. What nationality would you say represents you the best?I will answer this question through coffee representation. As you know I lived all over the world and was lucky enough to live in Italy most of my teen years and into my twenties. If I were asked what nationality I am, at any time I would probably say I feel closer to the idea of being an Italian more than any other nationality. I mean, these formative years were crucial for my education about life, certainly my ideas about love, without a doubt I learned the appreciation of art and beauty. The charms of Italy are delicious in every way and I feel like I was born to always return to its beauty. However, as much as I love the richness of Italian espresso, you will never find me without my Bosnian coffee. I treasure it because if Italy is my heart then Bosnia is like my soul. I have a deep connection to it because my mother?s family and lineage is rooted there. There is a melancholia and intense interest in Bosnia that I have had since youth regarding culture, weltanschauung, personal destiny. Most definitely America is big, free and in many respects comfortable. We pay a price for comfort here though, and it is everyone?s personal decision what that cost should be. My idea of who I am is not necessary hooked into being American, Italian or Bosnian. I am all of it. I produce my work and dream my dreams by culling from the cultural m?lange that is the sum of all places I have lived.
Your daughter Anima travels with you, how does she relate to traveling and what are her ideas about it?Anima is her mother?s daughter. When she was little she was always asking ?when will we go to New York City, to California, to Washington? She told me when she was 6 she intended to study University either in London or at the Sorbonne. This made me very happy, of course because I never shut up about traveling and wanting to travel. She probably assumed it was better to get with my program. When we took our long trip to Italy however, it was difficult for her to adjust. I think being in Florence or a larger city would have had different results but we were in a very tiny village and the chances for communicating with other children her age was rare. She withdrew for a while and was very homesick. Only the incredible Italian food saved her and made her happy. Her zio made special steaks and fabulous plates of prosciutto to keep her spirits up and that helped.
Since we are back in America she is very happy but she admitted that she misses Italy and she will eventually like to go back. I think as parents we have to be very sensitive to our children. Traveling for a few weeks is usually no problem. Actually moving to a different culture presents more difficulty in adjustment, especially in the teen ages it is not as easy as it seems. I wrote about this in my blog ?Traveling with Anima? while in Italy. Every culture and place can be fantastic for an adolescent but there are considerations that need to be respected and understood so that they have a good time too. They are not adults but still have a right to have a say how they live. Having said that, as soon as she is ready for a move, I am ready too.
In your opinion is there something that ties together the idea of coffee traditions in the world? A cup of coffee in Bosnia or in the United States?Of course, coffee culture is expressly different in every country. America has a very fast moving culture. We are the gods of the fast pace. Everything is to go: food, coffee, even church. It is extreme. People kill themselves working many hours, no vacation for a long time, they have to eat and drink on the run. Italian coffee is appreciated for a ?time out? even if it is a relatively quick one at the corner bar. Then there is Bosnian coffee, which is tailor made to sit in leisure. Talk, breathe, lounge.
Coffee traditions are deep rooted because it is a beautiful elixir with a long history and all manner of purported healing and life enhancement properties. For me the American way is the least attractive because it?s so fast. They drink it while jogging, while driving. I don?t understand this barbarism. Also, even if the coffee is good, they are so fanatic about the process it becomes an exaggeration, like a satire. I still love Italian espresso, so perfect and rich and the friendly culture that goes along with taking a cup of coffee together. The Bosnian kafa, like Turkish, Greek, Armenian and Bulgarian coffee that is really where you can still find antique culture shining through a small cup of thick, black, sweet brew. What coffee represents in every country is at least for a particular community of coffee lovers an enjoyment in gathering and slowing life down for a little bit each day whether at the caf? bar in Italy or kafana in Bosnia or Starbucks in America. I like that.
The Espresso represents Italy best. How do you think Italians traveling abroad relate to foreign coffee and food?Yes, Espresso is Italy at its best. And so Italian food and craftsmanship although I have to say there are many places that are unfortunately following the American model of ?fast food? even in Italy. I was surprised and shocked and very disappointed. Maybe a younger generation is not as inspired by purity and craft; I am not sure what it is. At any rate it is clear to me that Italians abroad are very disappointed when they realize that you cannot get a simple caf? espresso or a plate of good pasta everywhere. Italians take their food and drink seriously and will not eat just anything that comes before them. Especially in America, unless you only travel to the bigger cities on the East or West Coast and then Denver, Dallas, Las Vegas, they will just not find the excellence that they have in Italy. So, I think that they relate to food abroad out of curiosity but since they are so spoiled they are very happy to be back at home.
The next cup of coffee you drink in the ...?
Well, I sincerely hope that Ani and I will travel across the Ocean again soon, even this year. The plan is to bring a group from Denver to Italy and then go on to Sarajevo, Malta and finally to Istanbul. I have friends and family in all those places and so much to show and also to learn. I will have coffee in all those places and of course write about it. I can?t wait!

Greetings from the RV Kaharoa, voyage KAH 1301. There is not much to report scientifically today as we are still transiting to the first station.? We left Wellington Harbour yesterday and sailed through the Cook Straits and up the east coast of New Zealand?s North Island. We expect to get to the Trench soon.
Most of the daylight hours today were spent somewhere in the vicinity of Cape Turnagain and Cape Kidnappers.? By late tonight we should be turned upsides down by weather off the East Cape before a day of plain sailing out to the Kermadec Trench.
This whole area has of course quite a nautical history with the Capes Turnagain and Kidnappers and the straits being of the Captain James Cook legacy; it?s all a bit ?Cooky? as I like to say.
Similarly, the trench indirectly gets its name from swashbuckling adventures on boats. It is named after the adjacent Islands, which are named after an 18th century Breton navigator-fellow called Jean-Michel Huon de Kermadec (1748-1792), who went there in the 1790s on the Bruni d?Entrecasteaux expedition on the premise of doing something important but decided instead to go gallivanting and name every plant, animal and island he found after himself, only to find out later that this did not increase his h-index.
The trench is ~1200 km long with a maximum depth of over 10,000m, making it the fifth deepest trench in the world ? an impressive crack in the Earth!
It is nice to be cruising in such a nautically historic part of the world, with the beauty of it all only temporarily shaded by the fact the RV Kaharoa handles the sea like an inflatable pig; officially described as ?lively seaway?.? But we love the old girl, happy days.

A newly formed bipartisan task force is taking aim at Hurricane Sandy?s collateral damage as it looks to give property owners a tax break.
State Sen. Joe Addabbo (D-Howard Beach), a member of the task force, is co-sponsoring new legislation that would provide relief from property taxes for city homeowners whose properties were badly damaged by the October storm.
The bill, known as the New York City Hurricane Sandy Assessment Relief Act, would assist homeowners whose properties, as a result of damage from the storm, lost 50 percent or more of their assessed value. Property tax relief would be provided to homeowners based on the amount of damage sustained by their properties during Hurricane Sandy, and people whose homes lost all of their value as a result of the storm would not be assessed any property taxes at all.
?Property owners who are trying their best to put their lives and homes back together after the devastation of Hurricane Sandy should not have to worry about paying full property tax bills on houses that are horribly damaged, or in some cases, no longer exist,? said Addabbo. ?Tax bills are based on the assessed value of the property, and if the property is in shambles and has lost most or all of its value, the tax burden must be reduced accordingly or eliminated. These people have already lost so much, they don?t need this additional financial and emotional burden.?
Addabbo said the percentage of loss in assessed value of the properties would be determined by the city Department of Finance, whose findings could be reviewed by the city Tax Commission if requested by the property owner. Homeowners seeking the assessment relief would need to submit a written request to the Finance Department for consideration within 90 days of the legislation being approved and signed into law by the governor.
The bill is now under consideration by the Senate Committee on Cities. In the state Assembly, the legislation is being reviewed by the Committee on Real Property Taxation.
Addabbo noted that he continues to be involved in Hurricane Sandy relief efforts, both in his district ? which was especially devastated by the storm ? and in the state Legislature.
?This tax relief legislation seeks to address just one aspect of the many issues that have arisen in the wake of Hurricane Sandy, and I know we will be taking action to remedy other concerns and problems related to the aftermath of the storm,? he said. ?I hope that this bill, which would ease a financial burden on homeowners who are already suffering so many heartbreaking hardships, will get the legislative attention it deserves.?
