Downtown YA: Hard Decisions

Blog of Feb. 5, 2012

Greetings All!

I had to make a difficult decision a couple of weeks ago. I terminated my relationship with my agent. I wasn?t sure I was doing the right thing but after several weeks----and I do mean weeks---of thinking about it, I decided to do it. Will I get another agent? Maybe. I?m going to try but if I don?t that?s okay, too. The agent just wasn?t a right fit for me. Maybe the next one will be.

I submitted THE VIDDEN, my YA Dystopian with zombies to the Amazon Breakthrough Novel Award in January and I am awaiting the second round picks on Feb. 24th!!!! *fingers crossed*

I am still on the lookout for my next project. I thought I had one but it fizzled out. I want to do another YA so there you go.?

*INSPIRATION HITS * Two days later: Yeah, I stared a new WIP with zombies, witches and ghosts in it. It?s definitely YA and it has humor in it. It?s not a serious-The Walking Dead-type novel and it?s not quite Zombieland either. My zombies are warm---well, you know what I mean---fuzzy zombies.? They aren?t really fuzzy. You get the drift, right? They aren?t scary although they can be.When I write I have a tendency to write it all down in one fell swoop and then go back and edit as needed so I am on the writing roll right now.

I am behind on my ?read a book a day for 2012.? It?s Feb. and I have only read 18 to date as of today. I have some coming up on Kindle I want to buy as soon as they?re released. I hope to catch up soon but if I don?t I know I?ll catch up by the end of the year.

I spent a couple of hours looking at pix to use in the LORE OF FEI book trailer I want to do. I have the music picked out. All I need is the cover design and I?ll put it up on You Tube. Oh, and I found the perfect zombie picture for my new zombie book. If I decide to put it up myself, I?ll use it. I am thinking about doing the Kindle Select KDP program for one book just to see what happens. I think my new WIP would be perfect for it. But, first I have to finish it and edit it!

I had the pleasure of speaking to a high school creative writing class this past month and it was so much fun! I chatted about my writing process, writing my first novel WITCH HUNTER, different genres of fiction and taught them how to do a story map. I read them one of my flash fiction stories.? I did a giveaway with several of my YA books and the students asked me to autograph them!!! That was a surprise but a great one!? I spent 15 minutes answering their questions and got everything from: Where do you get your ideas from? To: What kind of an animal are you? A couple came up to me after class and asked me more questions. The teacher sent me an email and said other students from different classes (not in creative writing) came into her classroom asking if there were any books left! I?d do it again in a heartbeat.

I also started a new part-time job (not in writing) and I am so tired from working but I needed to find something to help pay my rent while my writing takes off *like a rocket, please*

I am looking forward to teaching an online writing workshop in March and I will write about it then. Go here to register: http://www.novelistsatwork.com/ It starts on March 5th and the title is: Writing the YA Novel. As the date gets closer, I?ll put the info on my website at: www.gaelicfairie.webs.com

Until Next Time, Take Care,

Kathleen
