Qualifications: Master?s degree required in special education or related field. Minimum 5 years teaching experience (Catholic school experience preferred) and leadership experience required. The Director of Special Education is responsible for all aspects of services for students with special learning needs in Archdiocesan Catholic Schools (PreK-12). This work includes providing leadership to principals and faculty members regarding comprehensive programmatic design of services for student with learning needs. The director also works to support schools to meet the needs of English Language Learners and those students with medical needs within the school community. The director works to ensure schools adhere to both state and archdiocesan policies regarding school/delegating nurses and immunization. Knowledge of current teaching and assessment theory required. Must be able to manage, prioritize and evaluate current special education laws and services available to non-public schools. Must be able to design and implement relevant and engaging professional development for leaders and teachers. Must demonstrate ability to leads others. Requires the ability to communicate effectively to a wide range of stakeholders, both orally and in writing. Candidate should be proficient with Microsoft Office Suite and school educational technologies that support student learning. The director is a collaborative member of the curriculum team and works occasionally with other archdiocesan offices to support the mission of evangelization and education of persons with disabilities.
Duties and Responsibilities:
?Reporting directly to the Assistant Superintendent for Curriculum, Instruction, and Professional Development, the director leads academic supports and initiatives for students with special learning needs or English language learners
?Promotes the mission of Catholic education for all students
?Provides archdiocesan-wide professional development and individual coaching to leaders, resource teachers, classroom teachers, paraprofessionals, and parents
?Supports schools with direct consultation and manages the levels of support provided from the Catholic Schools Office to schools
?Leads archdiocesan initiatives, establishing systemic resources across all schools, and assisting schools to provide appropriate learning environments for students with special needs
?Supports the diagnostic process and assists with interpreting psycho-educational data into classroom strategies
?Represents the Archdiocese of Washington in accessing services from local education agencies in both the special education and Title III arena
?Implements systemic practices across all schools that fulfill Archdiocesan policy regarding Student Assistance Teams and the Student Assistance Manual
?Monitors school policy compliance regarding serving students with disabilities and special learning needs
?Supports the management, training, and oversight of state law regarding school/delegating nurses and immunization of students
?Leads long range planning in schools to expand services and resources for students with disabilities, learning needs, and English language learners
?Manages the implementation of testing accommodations on standardized assessments administered within the Archdiocese of Washington
?Serve as a collaborative member of the Catholic Schools team and contribute to major initiatives such as accreditation, formal school visits, principal meetings and other projects as assigned
